Is this working for you? When I had relaxed hair I did it on my own...and my hair thrived unlike when I did go to a salon...and I know many people who have had the same experience.
I'm glad it worked for you, I hope to hear your about your progress.

If you don't now how to do your own relaxers, go to a professional BUT keep in mind that professionals don't know what they are doing a lot of the time either. Make sure that you KNOW that your hairstylist is good!
Some formulas of perms and relaxers are crap, but many aren't. Price is not a good indicator of quality when it comes to product. Also, anything that a stylist can do for you, you CAN do yourself. I personally do not like to be dependent on someone to do my hair. It's less of a hassle to let a stylist do it, just like it's less of a hassle to go pick up some food from McDonalds instead of cooking your own dinner.
I just like to do my own hair, but if you happen to be uncomfortable with doing it, that's fine. Going to a good stylist has is advantages too.
I am on the hairboards today b/c stylists helped me ruin my hair. Not one bothered to share with me or teach me the proper way to care for my hair. They just inisisted that as long as I was coming to them and they were taking my money-- that my hair would be fine. It wasn't.
It wasn't until I started doing my OWN research on hair care, styles, and products that my hair started to grow and thrive. My hair would have never been the way it is today had I kept going to stylists.
i myself have had bad experience with reaxing at salons. It has made me scared to go back to relaxing. Instead im just texturizing my self. I am confident that i now know how to look after relaxed hair but because of them i still wont go there.
Hello. I am new to the forum and this is my first post. Sorry but it is a bit lengthy.
I am partly in agreement with cherish16diva. I have been successfully relaxing my hair for years, both at home and at salons. I am also a big time believer in regular trims to keep only the healthiest hair. I have always trimmed my hair routinely and still attained growth. I am of the belief that it is better to have healthy looking hair than long straggly hair (no offense to you ladies on the board who care for your ends). I have just seen so many women flat out refuse to trim obviously broken, uneven, split ends in favor of retaining length.
I admit that there are plenty of licensed hairdressers who are "technically qualified" but do not have a clue as how to best care for aa hair and myself have been to one or two salons where they made a mess of my hair (terrible products, over blowing, etc). I live in NYC so there is no shortage of good neighborhood beauty shops. For years I only went to one hairdresser who taught me so much about products and the value of a good cut and good hairdresser. She has since moved so I had to find a new salon.
I think that specifically in my case, the best of both worlds is ideal. I prefer to relax at salon, but do much of the maintenance at home (ie wash, condition, roller set, blower, curling iron). Favorite products include, Terax, Biolage, FF Protein RX Mask, Perfecta (impossible to find except at the few Dominican shops that just happened to have it, it's the best conditioner I have ever used), Porosity Control Conditioner (after rinsing relaxer, before shampoo...it's a great neutralizer and very soothing to scalp).

I didn't know Porosity Control but I didn't it was a neutralizer. I believe you can either go to a salon or do a relaxer in your home and achieve healthy hair though I don't agree with some beauticians.
