I have gotten all over good reviews on shrinkies. no damage, no slipping, natural looking, just all over good. but I have gotten bad reviews on fusion because of damage women say they get as a result of fusion. but to me they seam so similar, both use glue, both have a heat application. in fact it seams to me (and i may be totally wrong) that they are basically the same thing? shrinkies just protect the bond with a plastic seal. so whats the big diffrence? why is fusion so damaging and shrinkies are not?

fusion is a lot more glue for one. While I don't suggest using
them, shrinkie without glue do sorta stay just because of
friction. Shrinkies with the glue lining work both on frition and
glue.
okay then for all the promoting keratin glue is polyamide, shrinkie
glue is also polyamide. however that's like saying, sesame street
is a tv show, nypd blue is a tv show. these things are true but
doesn't make them actually the same stuff. same family, notice
batman begins is a movie, not a tv show, just like nail glue is a
cyanoacylate. So I'm not trying to be patronising just to
illustrate but sesame street, nypd blue and batman begins (has anyone
seen that?) are all things that are filmed. clearly they are not
the same. and the glues are not the same either. shrinkie
glue is closer to keratin than nail glue but still. okay really
not trying to be patronising just enjoying my metaphor.
so yes the glue is similar but there isn't as much of it and its somewhat easier to remove.
as to the heat. with fusion you get the glue hot and work it into
the bond. so you get heat everywhere. With shrinkies the
outer layer absorbs most of the heat. and while rolling the bond
is reccomended by some the shrinkie glue doesn't have to be that hot to
melt as compared with the shirnkie melting so you don't have as much
heat on the hair (the shrinkie provides some insulation). plus
the glue deosn't get all over every strand.
last removal. removal is where a lot of damage is doen with any
method. because the glue penetrates throughout the strand with
fusion you have to get it off every hair int he strand with
fusion. a lack of patience/competance can lead to a lot fo
breakage. with shrinkies a lack of patience/competance can lead
to some breakage.
that said, you certainly have a point. all methods of hair extension have drawbacks.

Well, speaking of shrinkies...I am, as we speak sitting here- 1 hour post shrinkie removal. My mom just used the heat wand to remove all the strands and shrinks. We applied the shrinkie remover (Amm's) as we went along and I have been letting it sit a bit before jumping in the shower to shampoo. So far, removal was a breeze- the shrinkies came out very easily with no tugging. But of course, I havent COMBED anything yet! I plan to shampoo and blowdry...then hopefully I will be able to go over the residue spots with some gentle combing. I am crossing my fingers and praying for MINIMAL damage. I will no how bad it is later this evening, Broomboy and let you know how much damage I think has occured!

I know...I know! I think I am sitting here procrastinating because I KNOW what I will see. I keep repeating, " It's just natural shedding, It's just natural shedding."LOL.. But I will KNOW after I get the residue out, blowdry and style and get a good look and feel of it all. Plus- I have the handy hair trap in my shower drain to see just how much I've lost . Anything should be better than what happened after my hairlocs removal! That removal tool is like a GUILLOTINE to your poor defenseless hairs in the locs! lol. Never Again...

I'll be curious to hear how that goes. I always work the oil through the hair to get all the residue out before I wash and comb. It would be great if I didn't have to "work" each extension.

After letting the remover sit for over an hour, I shampooed, conditioned, amd blowdryed. The glue residue was still hard and fast stuck to my hair and running a comb or brush through wasnt happening. I was sooo upset and had to put MORE remover on, working it through each piece AGAIN...I had to eventually use a fine tooth comb to pick and slide out all the glue and loads ofmy hair was definitely coming with it ( even after all the shed hair in the drain). I believe the glue couldn't get out was the tacky glue I went over my Hairlocs pre-tips with- because it was yellowy, gummy and soft. The shrinkie residue is somewhat hard and white right? I wish now that I had not applied the Aleen's over it... I think it would have saved much of my hair. Overall, I loved wearing the shrinkies...but the removal SUCKED for me! My hair is definitely a bit thinner now.( but doesn't looked TRASHED or anything!) Anyone know what I may have done wrong? I am thinking about trying the pinch braids next time...looking for someone close to me. I live in NC .

From my understanding everyone that uses the Aleenes always topcoats with either LG or nail glue to help prevent the tipping glue from transferring into your own hair.

...I knew I must have missed something! Live and learn,I suppose. I probably could have just put them in by themselves...I just dont know what Hairlocs uses to pre tip with??? They told me it was beeswax ???? But their pretips have been coming in hard - not soft and pliable like they used to be. I just dont know...So nail glue wont transfer to the hair???
nope, the nail glue doesnt transfer into the hair. I think the only residue that is left in the hair is from the shrinkies. And it comes out easily with acetone or (the better choice) amms citrus remover. My experience, when Ive tipped with Aleenes and nail glue or LG the tip comes back out of the shrinkie intact so Im guessing that the residue that is left in my hair is from the shrinkie and not the aleenes, nailglue or LG.

And you didn't experience the horrible combing marathon like I did to get the shrinkie residue out, Sherrie? Is the residue you are left with somewhat crunchy and white? I had some of that in the hair too-that was easier to get out.I am assuming THAT was the "not-as-damaging" shrinkie residue. If I do it again, I am gonna try pre-tipping my own (with a top coat of nailglue of course!)Just regular nailglue???
The only thing I don't mind transferring into my hair is Liquid Gold. I
actually like to cover over the tip with that and let it melt away under
the shrinkie. It comes out easy with the remover, too.
You need to work it in the remover with a thumb and forefinger which
will allow you to gently separate the hair strands. Work in the oil
again, separate, work in, separate. This takes maybe 15-30 seconds
to accomplish. NEVER try to comb or brush through the hair when
you have hardened residue still in the strand. A comb is not even in
my removal program. I guarantee you will encounter resistence if
you try to comb your hair with residue still in it. I keep my thumb
and forefinger over the strand and the crumbly residue slides down
the hair shaft. Once it's out, then you can wash and brush your hair.
I have never had Aleenes in my hair so I have no idea what that's
like to remove. The gummy white stuff is not shrinkie residue,
though.
Is there a pinchbraider in your area? Switch to that if DIY isn't your
thang.
I guess Ive never really noticed if its white (Since I remove them by feel and not sight) but it definitely leaves a residue on the strand of hair, that to me feels very stiff.
Yep just plain ol' cheapo nail glue!

Ok..I think I got it now. I definitely was battling the tacky glue...not the shrinkie glue. I am torn between trying the shrinks again and the pinch braids. I loved wearing the shrinkies. The pinchbraids look so much bigger! I am afraid they will show more. Isnt there a gal in Atlanta that does them?
Amm-The Liquid Gold isnt too difficult to remove? Doesnt get gummy??

LOL....No,mochachip...Most told me to wash and it would come out easily with normal brushing...thats why when it didnt--I freaked and panicked--then pulled out the DEATH comb... Oh well--I figure if you are going to master this hair thing, you're gonna PAY YOUR DUES somewhere along the way,right?? It took about 8months to feel the thickness come back after my hairlocs nightmare....this isnt nearly as bad! But I have a big photo shoot in 3 weeks and have to decide on what to try next! Quickly!
Just to clarify, Amm, when you say the LG comes out easy with the remover too, are you meaning your shrinkie residue remover, or do you use the LG remover to get that out? I have both, I'm just curious whether I'd be able to get it all out with your remover or if I'd have to combine the two. I've not used the LG remover yet, but yours feels like its not too damaging to my hair so far.
Either way, I think I am going to try letting the LG melt onto my hair under the shrinkie a bit too. I'm not losing as many as I was as i get better at putting them in, but still too many for my liking....
