My mom has been doing my touch-ups since last year. I was tired of the stylists always burning my scalp. I think my mom does a better job and I trust her more.

Thanks so much everybody for your advice! My mom did her own and it turned out great, so I do trust her. I think I'll give it a try, then in a couple years when I go off to college I'll learn to do it myself. It's funny - my stylist NEVER bases my scalp! But there's no damage. Hmm..seems kinda fishy to me. But I feel comfortable w/ my mom since she does base hers. Afrolatina - u said u sometimes use Creme of Nature. I think that's the one I currently use too. So I'll continue w/ that. Thanks again everyone!

I apply my own relaxers now, but in the past I've had a best friend of mine apply for me (my mom never has).  She was actually good and never over/underprocessed my hair & NEVER applied it thru to the ends. Make sure you base your scalp and hairline and to follow the relaxer directions very carefully.  Good luck-

I have even had hairdressers put the relaxer on all my hair 4 the last couple of minutes...but I was not that vocal...does your Mom do her own hair? what will she/you do to it aftewards?...I guess if you plan ahead it should be alright.

My mother relaxed my hair for years (in addition to the hairdresser).  She always did a great job, better than the hairdresser.  She would use Revlon Realistic Regular.  Now I just get it done at the salon and they use Cream of Nature.

If you are both confident in her ability to get the job done then go for it.  I would be extra careful not to scratch, base your scalp and areas around the hairline (extra care to places where maybe you do end up scratching).  And as Renee said, be sure that your mother will not apply the relaxer to your ends and that she has a good gentle technique for smoothing the areas where the relaxer is applied.  Rinse your hair super well, be sure to have a neutralizer on hand, the ones that come with relaxer kits are good.  Wash the hair as many times as necessary (4-5 times).  (My personal picks: Bone Straight Neutralizing Shampoo and Porosity Control Conditioner which neutralizes and is very soothing after a relaxer).

Do not use a children's relaxer thinking it is safer or gentler.  That is a misconception.  Choose a relaxer that is good for your hair type and that you trust will work well on your hair.  Ask your hairdresser which one they use (say your friend wants to know).  If they won't tell you, I can honestly say that I have used several brands that have all worked well (Revlon Realistic, Cream of Nature, Affirm).  There are many other very good brands out there and maybe more people on the boards can give your their recommendations.

Good luck.

P.S.  I would trust a hairdresser or my mother over myself any day to do a relaxer.  Even though I know the steps, I just don't have the confidence.  Go figure.

My mother use to put my relaxers in when I was a bit younger she did a great job. I've been putting my own relaxers in for a good while now, it saves me money which is a good thing.  If your mother knows exactly whats she's doing then by all means go for it!

Hey all! Hope everything's good. I was talking to my mom and she told me that she could do my touch-ups instead of having a stylist charge so much every time. I've never had chemicals put on my hair by anyone other than my stylist and I don't even know which relaxer she used, so do u think it's a good idea to have my mom do it? I trust my mom since mothers always know best , but what if something goes wrong? Any recommendations or do any of u do ur relaxer/texturizer yourself or have a family member do it? How'd it turn out?
