Hi everyone.  I have dark brown hair (natural). My complexion is almost on the olive side..medium I would say.  I have my hair colored monthly...especially to help with those 30 something pesky greys  The problem with my hair is the red undertones.  I got it highlighted last year with dark blonde tones and of course it came out brassy and reddish.  I want something totally different but am afraid of it going the same way with the brassy red tones.  I don't want to go blonde.  My colorist says I should stay with the red lights only because that is what I have naturally.  I need to go in a couple of weeks.  My hair looks bad I think now...I have the dark brown going with the ends red! ...mainly I know because of the pool.  Any ideas from anyone with dark brown hair that wants to do something different?  Thanks everyone!

How about a light ash brown if you want to go a little lighter and without brassy undertones? Since you're already naturally dark brown, why not go blue-black? Like the actress, Claudia Black, she's naturally dark brown but she dyes her hair black and it looks very striking on her.

I do like the idea of the black.  I did try that in my college days and did like it and many women of my ethnic background (Portuguese) have that hair color.  The only thing I think about in that regard is the greys coming in showing more than they do now.  I actually mentioned that tonight (the black) to my boyfriend and was like "uh no ..don't do it"  Then said he liked the blonde highlights I got last year.  The only thing was it didn't look so blonde to me other than a cheapy blonde look.  All highlights always tend to go on the red side with me.  Thank you for your input. I appreciate it:)

It's obvious your hairdresser didn't do a good job. Instead of blonde highlights, caramel highlights are very pretty on dark brown hair. More natural and less conspicious than blonde highlights as well as less roots showing. Caramel highlights are not reddish or even orange, but sort of like light brown/dark blonde highlights up close. I've gotten caramel highlights on brown base before and it looks great. Also, find a new hairdresser! Just a thought.
