So I'm loving this whole weft thing. I have 4 tracks in right now, I did a row of shrinkies and then sewed the tracks to that, my sewing is pretty bad so they are coming loose a bit but I think with more practice I'll get it down.

I decided to go with this method over the glue in method because I wanted to give my hair a break from glue and also like the idea that I can re-use my wefts... not like I really want to re-use my RK hair anyway but thats beside the point!

Anyway, what I'm trying to get around to saying is that I think I'm going to pursue the weft idea for a while and think I'm going to get hand tied wefts this time around as they're smaller... I did a search and read up on previous weft posts because I want to figure out where to get it from. I'm leaning towards the Bohyme Gold Body Wave Hand Tied from Ebonyline, has anyone ever ordered this? I know Bohyme in general gets good reviews but I wanted to know specifically what this one is like for shedding (my RK sheds like crazy) and whether it is a pretty dense weft, or a sparse looking one. I see that it is 4oz so I'm thinking I'll at least need 2 of them... does that sound about right?

Also, when you ladies are doing weft installs, do you generally install each track right next to the other, or do you leave a gap of hair in between? I left gaps but thats only because I only had one weft to work with...

Hi!

I love hand tied wefts and have worked with them many times.  They do not shed at all, as long as you don't cut the weft.

I find that the individual wefts are not dense enough and you have to sew at least 2-3 per track to get good density, unless of course you don't mind having like 10+ tracks in your head!  So when you put multiple hand tied wefts on a track it's not at flat and thin as it would be if you could get away with just one per track, but the weft tops are not as bulky as the machines wefts.

I have ordered the Bohyme Gold from Ebonyline and it's good stuff.  I order from them or Superhair factory also carries Bohyme hand tied too.

As far as the quantity needed,  how much hair you need to add depends on the thickness you desire and your natural hair's density.  I have some clients that only use 4 ounces, and then others use 6-8 ounces.  I would say just to be on the safe side, you should buy 2  of the 4 ounces packages.  If you have any left over you can always use it in the future.

I have had tracks installed both right next to each other and also with leaving spaces.  The problem with leaving space between tracks is that if you aren't careful with your brushing, your natural hair between the tracks can get matted. But if you make sure you get in there to detangle that area on a regular basis, I think it's fine to leave a space between.  It's probably more comfortable and better distributes the hair around your head anyway.

Good luck!

Hi Metalgirl.

I am going to be going with the woven track method myself in about a week, and was planning on using machine wefted hair.  Long-story-short, people that do strand-by-strand in northern VA are very hard to come by--unless you're willing to pay upwards of $1500/$1800 (that was my first-choice method) but I found someone in the area that has been doing the woven track method for several years & she advised that to keep my costs down, I can supply my own hair.  I used to have extensions back in the 90's and used to order my hair from HisandHer.com (I really liked their 50/50 blend).

My question is:  I wanted to try hand-tied wefted hair (I heard there is a lot less shedding and it is less bulky) but if you can't cut the wefting how do you handle smaller sections (i.e. on the sides of the head)?  I'm assuming they come in pre-cut lengths & you just need to fold them over a few times?

Okay, now for a GENERAL question—my blend is 27/613 but my natural hair color is VERY, VERY dark brown (almost black).  What is the best way to handle root touch-ups with woven track?  I need to touch my roots up every 6 weeks.  When I previously had extensions, my extension hair was much darker (much like my natural color) so it wasn’t an issue.  Any information on how you normally handle would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Kristin

Hi,

Hand tied wefts do not shed at all.  I don't like His and Her's  hair much anymore, I have had bad batches of it lately.  If you do order from them, only buy their cuticle hair.

I get my hand tied hair from Superhair Factory or Ebonyline.

Yes, you are exactly right, you fold the weft over if you need shorter pieces or stagger a few pieces if you need a longer piece.  The hand tied's come in premade widths of about 10" wide.

You should be able to color around the wefts to do your touch ups.  All my extension clients are also color clients, and I just carefully apply the tint around the extensions, and then make sure I rinse it out really good.  If they get foil high lights, I can foil the top of the head where there are no extensions.

Metalgirl, how many tracks do you usually do? I probably wouldnt mind wearing them right next to each other, I'm used an all over feeling with my installs anyway as I usually do strand by strand. I'm wondering if I didnt double up the wefts, but just started at the bottom of my head and when I got to the end of one track I could just kind of fold it back on itself in a sort of zig-zag pattern and go up my head like that... then it wouldnt have the bulkiness youd get with using 2 or 3 layers of it per track... but youd still use all the hair... just no spaces in between. Does that make any sense? Do you think that would work? i have no idea as I'm new to wefts so I'd be glad to hear any insight you had!

That weave pattern sounds interesting, and is kind of a variation on what is called a 'full cap' weave, where most of your head is covered in tracks.

It's worth a try!

For myself, I wear 4 thick tracks, and I don't really mind the bulkiness because I'm just clipping in the wefts and removing them at night to sleep.  The most tracks I have ever put on someone was 6 tracks.  So I think anywhere from 3-6 is considered 'normal' depending on how much hair you want to add.

Maybe I'll give that a try when I do my next install, I will post on how it worked out (if it works out!) :)

i dont need to add an awful lot, I only make it a couple inches longer than my actual hair, my main purpose of wearing the extra is to thicken it out, but I do like BIG hair!
