I've been highlighting my dark blond hair for several years.  I find after a while it just gets too highlighted and I want to start fresh, get back to my base color and then highlight.  Have a previous post here regarding "too white hightlights" and got it very successfully fixed. I'm pretty sure my stylist used semi-perm colorant and I like the richness and sheerness of the color.  Overall, what's the advantage of semi-perm vs perm coor ?  Another question, if you repetitively hightlight your hair, how do you prevent it from getting over highlighted?  (too blond _ Should you dye your hair dark and then get highlights? (or have the hairdresser do this).  I just find over time, even if I get low lights mixed in with high lights I just have too many colors in my hair. I don't know, this whole hair coloring thing is just too complicated sometimes!!!

I hear ya. First, semi-perm has advantages that it is less damaging and
also will come out if you find you do not like the color. Plus, since it
washes out, you won't get annoying root growth as much. But I
personally like permanent because color already washes out enough with
my hair as it is.

I think it's a good idea to redye your base color every once in a while and
rehighlight so you don't end up with ten different highlighting jobs.
Those are funny looking :P

You could have a hairdresser do it so that the result is more dependable,
however, I find my hair is in better condition after using box color
because of the mega conditioners that come with the box dye. Where I
get my hair done, they use normal conditioner on my hair after a dye job
and it ends up feeling dry and weighed down.
