QuoteReplyTopic: Annoying natural dreadlocks Posted: August 31 2005 at 4:22pm
Hello, I'm a guy that doesn't care too much of how he looks, but I do
want to be comfortable. I have long curly hair (Well long is relative -
I don't have a measuring tape but erhm, the hair above my forehead can
touch my adams apple and the hair on the back of my head can almost
touch my nipple.. this is if I stretch it of course, because it's curly
it's shoulder length. Erhm yeah.
Anyhow, so I haven't had a haircut since of any kind since I started letting it grow.
Now my hair looks and feels very fine, or at least, untill the end of
the summer. Now the back of my head is forming natural dreadlocks, and
huge knots. Of course my hair is full of knots but small ones that are
fine, whilst in the back it's uncomfortable and annoying.
What can I do about this? All I see is making dreads with my hair, but
it just won't feel the same - and will require more hair-care.
Any ideas? If not I guess I'm forced to make dreadlocks, but bleh.
Oh, and I would post good pictures if I could but I don't have a
camera, I do have a webcam, here are three pics. I have horrible
lighting in my room and my webcam isn't good though. I took one from my
hair, one with me now, and an old one with wet hair (that one is
stretched though, I don't know why)
Hmm I get a wafro when I do that, although it's very comfy I just feel silly. I do pull a wafro out now and then though.
I guess I don't know what other kind of option I could have other then
making my hair flat, into a wafro, or living with he knots. Dreads it
is I suppose.

Do you usually comb your hair with a wide tooth comb in the shower with your hair coated with conditioner in it? Or use your fingers as a comb while you have conditioner in your hair.
THere is a book called Curly Girl that might help you out. It's about curly hair and it has info about getting knots and tangles out.

it sounds like you either dont comb your hair very ofter, or dont really wash it that often. try this:
1.) when in shower shampoo hair as usual
2.) slather on conditioner
3.) com (either with a wide tooth comb or fingers) hair untill all knots are removed.
4.) towel blot hair dry
5.) put in a frizz control serum (like frizz ease)
voila. nicely defined frizz and tangle less curls
learn to love what you were born with
you can do anything if you set your mindto it (just dont try this with hair, that could turn out bad)

First of all, your hair is BEEOOTEEFULLLL!!! Combing after shampooing is definitely in order for your hair to prevent dreads. It's OK if you don't shampoo everytime you shower, and actually that is better for curly hair. Shampoo strips hair of the natural oils, and curly hair works best with lots of natural oils.
At least get your head wet every 2 or 3 showers and condition and then dab your hair dry with a towel. Then put in a leave-in conditioner (I like Neutrogena triple cream leave-in) and then comb, and then leave it alone. That should get rid of those dreads, if you don't get rid of them, you'll end of shaving your head bald one day. And that would be a shame, since you have great hair.

Well I wash my hair about once a day, although sometimes I don't feel
the need, it is very dry though but I don't know if that's bad. But I
<usually> cycle between two different shampoos, if that matters.
5.) put in a frizz control serum (like frizz ease)
Will that keep the hair from forming some sort of 'wafro'?
First of all, your hair is BEEOOTEEFULLLL!!!
Thank you. My hair seems to get both
very nice comments, or horrible ones (some people seem to think that
people with curly hair never wash and have very greasy smelly hair full
of fleas ).
What exactly is dabbing hair? I live in a French place so I don't
knoe these kinds of terms. What I do is I stroke my hair downwards to
get the water out, and make my hair a bit straighter this way when my
hair drys up it isn't too puffy, and then I keep somewhat push/patting
my hair down as it dries. Oh i don't know what towel blotting is either
:p
Thanks for the replies!

Full of fleas! LOL! Dabbing your hair means to just touch it with a towel to dry it a little when it's wet. Then it won't be sopping wet. We say to 'do the dab' when hair is wet (as opposed to being rough with the towel to dry hair quicker) because that is when hair is most fragile and most prone to damage and breaking. Dabbing hair will keep your hair healthy.
I have puffy hair syndrome also, and after I have patted my hair with a towel, I comb through a leave-in conditioner, and then use a nickel size dab of gel. That keeps it from getting puffy. Don't use too much gel because your hair will get crunchy. Also, look for a gel that has no alcohol. I love love love Ouidad gels. Pantene and L'Oreal gels are also very good.
One more thing, you said that you wash your hair alot and it is dry. It would help if you didn't wash your hair but two or three times a week. You can get your hair wet and use a conditioner, like Pantene, which are great conditioners. If using a leave-in conditioner is too much maintenance for you, don't rinse out all the conditioner when you are in the shower. To be more specific, when you condition, don't put it on your scalp if you are not going to rinse it all out because you'll have the itchies on your head. Just put tons of conditioner on the shaft of your hair (ears down) and don't rinse it all out.
Goodluck mon amie! Au revoir et au bientot!

I'm really not sure why your hair would be locking if you are washing and combing it everyday. You are keeping it combed and detangled right? From your pics your curls look like big loose curls and they should definitely not be locking as long as you are caring for them. Don't worry, you don't have to have dreadlocks unless you want to.
Do you get a wafro even if you comb your hair with conditioner in it
and then rinse it out? I don't mean for you to comb your hair when it's
dry because that will definitely give you a wafro. A good detangling conditioner is DevaCurl One Condition.
ETA: name of conditioner.
