I'm going to dreadlock my natural hair, but it's only just bra-strap
length. I'm planning to use the backcombing method, but I expect
this to shorten my hair by about 1/3, and I want to retain my current
length!
So far, my plan is to dye some HH (cheers Amanda8Beechwood!) to
my own colour and gradually add it in as I backcomb the dread,
palm-rolling, waxing and dread-perming it when it is integrated into
my own hair.
Now, I just came up with this idea by myself so it may very well be
crap. Which is why I wrote a list of questions for you knowledgeable
people.
Will the hair be integrated firmly enough to stay there?
Will this method avoid a 'tidemark' where my real hair ends and the
donated hair begins?
How effective will backcombing and perming the hair be in
disguising any difference in texture?
Will the dreadperm help 'lock' the hair into my own?
Would I be better pinchbraiding (in larger sections than for loose
extensions, obviously) the HH in before backcombing? Or would I
end up with a tideline of bumps in my dreads in the future? And
would this lead to a sudden difference in the thickness of the dreads
where my own hair ends?
Ahh, so many questions. If anyone could answer even one or
two for me, it'd be a massive help. I've looked on Quinnster's, but I
couldn't find much discussion of simultaneous natural dread
creation/extension. If I were just putting synthetic dreads in again, I
wouldn't worry as that's only temporary. However, with natural
dreads, once I've done it I'm stuck with it, so I want to prepare
properly and get it right first time!
Hello, firstly i think if you try combing it in you will end up with a big loose mess of hair :( There was a lady of on quinns alst year who extended ehr own dreads. here is what she did:
She dreaded the extension hair whilst NOT attached to her head, unpicked the end of the natural dread, put the extension dread up inside the ends of natural hair and latchhooked her own hair through the extension dread. This was seamless, and looked great! Just like her real hair

Yes, I saw that one and considered doing something similar. IIRC,
her dreads were pretty mature, weren't they? Do you think that
technique would work with my baby dreads? Maybe I could
latchhook the extension dread onto my own dreads before applying the perm solution. Kinda fry it into place.

Vibrata, the person who did that had fairly mature dreads and to be
honest I don't think it would work with new dreads - you need
something fairly firm to latchhook the extra hair through. And the
method you suggested, adding extra hair as you backcomb will
almost certainly leave a noticable tidemark once your own hair starts
to grow, as there will be a greater volume of hair in the dread than
can grow out of your head, that part of the dread will be much
thicker than the new growth when it comes in. And also if you do find
it looks odd you will be stuck with it if you perm and backcomb it in.
I had natural dreads for over twenty years and used synth hair to
lengthen mine.
What I did was make a kind of double ended dread with only one half
of the dread sealed and backcombed and the other half, the loose
hair half I braided around the natural dread till I got to the bottomof
it, then backcombed and sealed the leftover loose hair, wrapping it
around the end of the real dread as I sealed to hide the join. This I
could leave in for three months like regular synth dreads and then it
was dead easy to remove and reapply as required. You can use this
method to add interesting colour effects or custom blend the synth to
match your own in whch case it's almost invisible. The advantage
with using this method is that the braiding around your developing
dread willl actually help it to dread in the same way that thread, wool
or rattail wrapping would.
There are methods using human hair which I've used on my clients
with afro textured hair but I tend to use the type of hair sold as 'Afro
Kinky Bulk' and it doesn't really work on caucasian hair - it's just too
different in texture.
The 'Vibrata" method is great though once your dreads are
established, and you will find your hair grows really fast when
dreaded so you will get your length back in no time.
I have done this to a few clients and what I do is put in a full head of human hair via fusion (leaving out the hairline as normal but covering the whole head) and then once finished backcomb in sections with knotty boy wax to form the dreads. They will matt up the same as your own hair but I always use a yaki human hair rather than silky as it backcombs and holds better. I have had great results with this method and it doesn't take any longer to matt up than if you did it to your own hair :) If you want to see some pics I have of a before and after just shout
