QuoteReplyTopic: Questions....... Posted: October 06 2005 at 12:00pm
I am new to the forum and really joined to read and get tips. I've done a quick look through and I like what I see. I have a few questions if anyone can help me.
I havent talked to my beautican yet but I want to go back natural. I think I rather press my hair every few weeks then to continue these perms. It doesnt seem to be strenghting my hair and I have bad breakage. Can any give me any advice on how to start the process or if this is a good idea. Anything, no matter how small the advice is appericated. I don't want my hair to fall out so just looking for some tips. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum Arizona! These girls are a wealth of information and congratulations on your decision. There are a bunch of girls who have made the decision to go natural and have done so succesfully. For the breakage, you should do a protein treatment such as Aphogee and then be sure to follow up with a good conditioner and moisturizer such as ORS (Organic Root Stimulator) Olive Oil, S-Curl, or Elasta QP Mango Butter. You can also trim off the relaxed portions gradually or do one big chop to remove the relaxed ends whichever you feel more comfortable with. You can also baggie your ends which means that you put a plastic sandwich baggie on after you saturate your hair with moisturizer and sleep with the baggie over it tied with a ponytail holder. HTH!! Thank you so much for responding. Okay right now I use Fantasia Pure Tea shampoo and their leave in conditioner. I use Aphogee protein treatment every few weeks but thats about it.
So I am going to eventually have to cut all my hair off? I was thinking of wearing the braids until I get a nice enough length..maybe wearing them for about a yr or so and then cutting my permed hair off. Hopefully my hair will have grown enough for me to manage it. Do you think that is a good idea or should I just cut it off and keep it braided?
I want to talk to my beautican about this, however she would be losing money and I don't know how informative she would be on the subject. So I decided to try here first, Ive been reading some of the topics and its very overwhelming all the information enclosed.

I think eventually you will need to cut the hair off because you will be dealing with two different textures but I would wait until one of the girls here responds who has actually gone from relaxed to natural because I'm relaxed. Hopefully your beautician will be caring enough to properly guide you with the thought that while you may be straying away for now, you'll be back for maintenance after your braids, but who knows... At any rate, just be sure to be diligent about mosturizing your hair to help with the breakage and retaining the length that you have.
Hi Arizona. I went from relaxed to natural without cutting all my hair off. I just trimmed it off gradually. The only thing I did was keep it flat ironed straight so I wouldn't get so much breakage from the two textures and made sure to do protein treatments.
I have pretty thick hair, yours looks pretty thick as well. Did you have a hard time managing your new growth? I'm going to start with the braids and when I take them out get my ends trimmed and deep condition and put them back in.
What are some good items to use on your scalp while you have your hair braided?
you should have a problem with not cutting it for a
year so long as its in braids,, u could have a good 6
inches in a year ,, it isnt necessary to braid it,,, i dont
think you should cut your hair off,, I understand how u
feel about talking to your hairdresser,, hairdressers
have always pressed me to relax my hair becuz they
were lazy and didnt feel like blowing out my mess of
curls,, and also cuz its 45 bucks a pop so u dont
even have to go to her with your questions,, anyhoo
any questions u have feel free to ask,,, as for a good
scalp treatment ,, perhaps jojoba oil,, i have read that
its very similar to our own sebum and also it helps to
clean the scalp ,, look into essential oils,, they are
very good for the scalp......
Hair type: 3b some c?, fine strands, last relaxer sept 05, never again!!! current :ap length on sides,,nearly bsl in back, damn those old frazzled ends! I am hair OBSESSED

Nope, managing my new growth was easy. I just kept it pressed and wrapped. My hair is probably pretty average....not real thick, not thin. Sounds like a good idea to do deep conditioning before putting your braids back in. Don't forget to trim pretty regularly. You don't want your ends to start getting weak and splitting.
As far as oils for your scalp, like cookiesnkream said, jojoba oil is good. Also coconut oil would be good also....anything without mineral oil.

I wish you luck on your transitioning. Pokahontas gave you excellent advice. I tried to transition 2 times before I actually became natural. Beaticians can be helpful sometimes but many times they give you alot of negative feed back because without you, they aren't earning any money. Every beautician I had told me I couldn't go natural because....(insert reasons here), so if you have an encouraging, positive beautician that is fine but not one that is just trying to pull you down.
