These are extend tubes or micro links. You can also  get a few other similar products (with small differences) that others prefer but they all work basically the same way.  The cheapest ones that consistantly perform well for people are from http://haircandy.net/microlink.htm. It's worth getting the special pliars that have the little groove for the rings.
