Relying solely upon shampoo to keep your hair strong and healthy-looking is not realistic. The conditioning agents in shampoos don`t stay on your hair long enough to make a substantial difference on hair`s condition. What a shampoo CAN do is gently clean your hair and make it smoother for the conditioning stage. Look for shampoos containing gentle cleansers like sodium laureth sulfate. Stay away from TEA-lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth/lauryl sulfates and sodium lauryl sulfate, as these can dry out hair over time.

Personally, I do my shopping at Sally Beauty, where I have a big selection of gentle shampoos: Phyto Systeme Hydra-Botanics, Aura Organic Shampoo and the Loreal Vive series. If you`re willing to spend a little more money, Back to Basics and Redken are typically good--just be sure to read the ingredient list.

Shampoos dont keep ur hair strong or healthy....

I`ld say deep conditioners do that...

And, if u want to really keep ur hair in condition, i would not recomend ANY inexpensive stuff.... u should treat ur hair in the same way u treat ur skin: u wud not dare think of applying a moisturiser that is for 99p, because its "inexpensive" would you? same with ur hair: you should not worry about the cost of things, but more WHAT will the product exactely do.

if u want a good Shampoo tho, i would personally recommend Kerastase Bain Satin (found in all Hair Salons):

this luxurious shampoo cleanses ur hair, with a moisturising effect, so as to not completely strip ur hair of its natural oils. This is sold in hair salons for around a bout a tenner.

However, if i havent convinced u and u still want an inexpensive choice... try "Te Tao Jasmine Tea Shampoo" sold for around about 3 quid.

Hi liz naz. Totally off the subject here, but I`m curious about how the money system works in Great Britain. (I was in London twice seven years ago and I fell in love with that glorious city.) I know what a pound is but what is a quid and a pence? Thanks for enlightening an American.

Many expensive shampoos and conditioners contain the same ingredients as much less expensive products. A great way to save money while taking good care of your hair is to write down the ingredients in your favourite salon product and find an OTC product with the same ingredients. Sometimes just Googling the ingredients will yield a variety of products to choose from.

One thing I've been surprised by is the number of dog grooming products which contain exactly the same ingredients as salon brand shampoos and conditioners.

I splurge on l'Occitane Angelica shampoo and conditioner occasionally. I know they aren't actually better than some of the less expensive brands, it's purely their aesthetic appeal I'm paying for. I'm a sucker for a nice scent and beautiful packaging. There's also the feeling I get when I'm "treating" myself to something "special". When my l'Occitane bottles are empty, I just fill them up with OTC products so I can still enjoy the pretty bottles. :-)
My user name is WAY too long. Just call me Juliana. :-)
