I don't understand how it's possible to not have overlap. My new growth is usually only an inch, maybe an inch and a half. I can hardly get through that jungle without breakin hair. But I can't get any on my scalp or on already processd hair? I'm sorry, but this is impossible.

I think I've been getting way too much relaxer when my mom would do my hair because she definitely put relaxer on the rest of my hair and would do a LOT of smoothing. But even this time when I did it on my own, it was impossible to not get it on the rest of my hair. Not too far down the shaft, but defnitely some that has been processed. I even used Southern Girl's tips. What magical way is it that everyone else is relaxing that I just don't understand?

It might be that people are stretching their relaxers and doing a fresh one when they have a few inches of new growth...

Try putting conditioner on your already processed hair so if you do overlap it won't process that hair as fast or something like that. I've also read of people using vaseline on their already relaxed hair. Do a search and look around.

I was really trying to stretch this last time, but I was getting so much breakage and shedding I couldn't stand it anymore. My hair has always done that when it gets close to needed a relaxer. I guess I will have to try harder this time.

I have the same problem with stretching.  I think I will need to wash n set 2x week beginning @ 8-9 weeks.  Maybe then I can avoid so much shedding / breakage. Also, I found that this time around (went 10-11 weeks) I used deep conditioner weekly (Carol's Daughter Shea Butter Hair Smoothie) which comptely altered the state of my roots.  Made them much, much softer and more managable.

I think it is nearly impossible not to overlap and
overlap= horrid breakage at least for me when my
incompetent hairdresser did it,, i began doing my
own perms but was sooooo timid not to overlap that i
usually underprocessed and my hair stillended up
crispy,, I always believed I needed a perm to have
straight hair,,but i was wrong since i got a quality flat
iron my hair gets straighter than with a perm and
blowout combined and im nearly convinced i dont
need a perm ever again becuz i must be about 12 or
13 weeks and my hair straightens just fine(im a
3bmaybe some 3c),, if u you have never invested in
or tried a really good quality flat iron like solano
sapphire or maxiglide my suggestion is to just try it
and see if u reallly truly need chemicals to be
straight ....
Hair type: 3b some c?, fine strands, last relaxer sept 05, never again!!! current :ap length on sides,,nearly bsl in back, damn those old frazzled ends! I am hair OBSESSED
