Hey everyone! I am new to this industry and new to this website...I am getting ready to start working at a salon and was wondering if you had any good ideas as to how to build clientele? I am ready to work my butt off but would like to hear some advice from all of you who have been successful in your endeavors. I would greatly appreciate a little help from all of you wise ones :)

Lots of love

Stephanie

Building a good solid client base as a hairdresser is definitely tied to dedication, hard work and persistance.

Find affordable ways to advertise your services to let people know you are now in business. Some things work in some areas but not others.

For example, you might be able to take out an ad in your church bulletin to let people know that you are a member of the church and doing hair. You might offer a special "new client" discount coupon to members of the church.

You can also offer a referral deal where you offer the referring customer a certain percentage off their next haircut or hair service for referring someone.

If you specialize in brides or proms or updos, get out the Yellow Pages and dial all the listed bridal consultants or dress stores in town that specialize in bridal or special event gowns. Ask if you can offer their clients a special coupon with a discount. Offer to cut the owner's hair for free so that they can see what type of work you do and then would be OK about referring you to their customers.

You might also specialize in early morning or late hours or working on days when a lot of the other stylists might be off.

You can also volunteer to teach hair care classes at the local Y or library to get your name out there.

Everywhere you go, everyone you meet, always have a card and be willing to give a small "Come See Me Discount".

Ask your happy clients to refer their friends and family.

See what I mean? Work hard, work smart and treat your clients right and you will be on your way to a long and happy career.

Good luck to you.

I found my hairdresser from an ad in Clipper magazine (it's like Pennysaver). It was a really small color ad and said that she does a color and cut (or t-section highlights) for $65. She said she got so much response from the ad that she had a 2-month wait list at first. She also has a referral program where every friend you refer knocks of $5 next time you come in. I referred 4 people and hey, $20 meant I could get a pedi so I thought it was great. She also works late (until closing at 10:00) and she told me that she gets a very high majority of her clients after 4:30 pm.

Just an idea...hope it helps.

This is because I can spell konfusion with a K
It's hard to like it

And why i had to try it...

Hi,

Yes...I have gotten a lot of email from up and coming hairdressers and it seems that the ads in the neighborhood magazines do work very well for a lot of them.

I also know a hairdresser who ran ads in her church bulletin and that got her a lot of new customers right away.  Most people are nervous about finding a new hairdresser but will try someone that is close to where they live or someone that goes to their church.  There is a lot of word of mouth recommendations that people make.  So make sure you just get your business cards out there.

Also, offer do some hair for free for your friends and family and then ask them to carry your business cards and when they get asked about their gorgeous color or style, give out your business card.  It really works.

Good luck to you.
