My hair is only a bit below shoulder length and I can bun it if it isn't too slippery. I have always been able to do this, and I've had a few boyfriends over the years who were impressed with this for some reason! (it comes in handy when you are hiking or camping).

Rini, the first time a came across this
method of styling I was in a situation where I needed to tie my hair back and I
didn’t have a hair tie. For the pony tail style I just take a section of hair
and wrap it around as many times as I can and then just kinda tuck the ends
into the portion of wrapped hair. For the bun I do something similar after I make
the bun I just find somewhere to tuck the ends so that it stays in place, it’s
a bit hard to explain really maybe someone else can explain a bit better lol.

For the bun, I pull my hair back as though I am putting it in a ponytail, then twist it, then loop it around to put it in a bun, then pull the last ends through the middle (from back to front). It doesn't work with clean hair, but works great with hair that hasn't been washed for a few days. I wonder if I will be able to do this once my hair grows longer...?
I just twist it round until it starts coiling around like it would for
a normal bun then you tuck the ends through the centre.
SpecialKitty-you should still be able to do it when your hair gets
longer; the bun'll be bigger that's all.

I love this style! I had a friend who wore her hair like that all the time.
I tried to do it when my hair was long, but it had too many layers so it
wouldn't stay up. What's really great about this style is when you want to
take it down, do as follows:
1. Stand within an eye shot of a hot guy, or the guy you like at the time.
2. Flip your head over and shake your head little bit to loosen up the bun
3. Then flip back again, letting your hair flow freely as it flips over your
head and falls down your back
4. Follow up by non chalantly running your fingers though your hair to
get it out of your face
I find this to be an effective mating call.

I used to be able to do the bun alone thing when my hair was
platinum...It was dried out enough to have good "stick it" stay power.
There were some advantages to having dried out hair. Its also
harder to do when your ends are blunt instead of tapered. (Can't do it
now, still too short and slippery).
