I know there is a classification for hair texture and thickness, but does
anybody know of a system for classifying hair colour? If not, could we use
this thread to try and create one?

The only one I've ever heard of is the classification by color of hair dye.  (I'd be a level 6 I think)...that sort of gives you a lightest to darkest range, but doesn't talk about how much red is in it or detail like that.  Levels listed on this page (scroll down to where it says "Levels of Hair Color").

Susan, I see what you mean on the linked site.

1=Black

2=Very Dark Brown

3=Dark Brown

4=Brown

5=Medium Brown

6=Light Brown

7=Dark Blonde

8=Light Blonde

9=Very Light Blonde

10=Light Platium Blonde

the only problem I see is that they don't include red!

I'd like to use descriptive words like, Sandy, Chesnut, Chocolate. That
would be cool, but it allows for a lot of variables (ie. your chocolate may
have more milk in it than my chocolate hahaha) So I guess you could
further classify by making a Dark Chocolate catagory. Or black coffee!
that would be a good one to discribe that color.

I don't really know where I'm going with this, but it seems like it'll be alot
of fun. Perhaps we can try to classify our own hair colors by comparing it
to everyday things that have a universal color connotation (so we're all
on the same page, for instance, strawberries are always red, but apples
are not always red, so you have to be more specific ie. macintosh apples)
Wow this is getting a little complex here.

I have mongrel hair: A bit of black, a bit of chocolate brown, a bit of caramel, quite alot of red and a really small amount of blonde.

I agree, let's use words instead of numbers. Some things to consider:

  • using words related to a sweet e.g. chocolate, toffee, caramel, truffles, vanilla, espresso brown, etc.
  • words related to woods such as mahogany, padouk, oak, birch, etc. Also note how woods vary in figuring and direction of grain.
  • words related to furry mammals such as deer
  • Consider Old West terminology e.g. saddles, horse species, wheat fields, and log cabins
  • Consider the connotations of synonyms for a color. For example, red can also be crimson but it has a different connotation. Crimson sounds richer, darker.
  • When in doubt, consult your 64-color crayon box

I have two combs made of Chechen wood, and I definitely have to say they match my hair color. my hair is figured Chechen color in natural light but almost fire-red when I look through it.

Right now my hair is two different colors (three if I count the whites that are starting to pop up). Umm, I'm not feeling very original at the moment, so I'm afraid I have to go with a description I used on another hair site: Half-dipped, dark chocolate biscotti.

Basic hair colours are
  1. Blonde
  2. Brown
  3. Black
  4. Red
  5. and I suppose you could add in unnatural (blue, pink etc.)
We could use the numbers to say what category your hair falls in too then add a word on if you don't want to use a scale of numbers (i.e. 1.1 would be very light blonde.)

I like the tasty hair color idea, but frankly, I have no idea what color I'd call mine.  It looks different in different lighting, though I think that means its just light brown.  Can I have hazel hair?

Wow, great suggestions everyone. I'd say my colour could be compared
to dark chocolate, but has dark red highlights in direct light, and
individual strands look redish when held up to the light. So I'd say......
Chocolate Covered Cherry.

While on the subject of hair colour, I have some things to add:

Me and my dog Oscar have the same hair color.

Chocolate Covered Cherry

Another thing; my boyfriend's ever-progressive hair color

From platnium blonde as a baby....

to redish brown in highscool...

to dark brown now...

(FYI my boyfriend does not dye his hair) It just changes color naturally.
I've seen this before, but never to this degree!

Susan W, hazel is a great way to describe hair. I also have hair that looks different all the time. It's ash/blonde/light brown/gold etc. The best word i found so far is hazel.

I think my hair color could be described along the lines of an amber ale - darkish brown with some red and gold highlights.

OOh hair color descriptions! And me without my crayon box,

Um I'd say blue-black and coal-black and the areas that the sun changed are like a dark-chocolate brown or a rich mahogany depending on the light and the angle.

I'm altering mine. It's a mix of caramel fudge, runny honey, and fresh wood stain.
