You Might think this is nuts...but it works for me. i ordered a reverse osmosis water filter for my kitchen sink. A GE Smar******er filter. it removes 99 percent of pretty much everything from your water. You can order it off the net too and it is fairly easy to install yourself (my husband did mine). Kind of expensive, but the water in my town has a lot of chlorine and stuff and i didn`t want my kids drinking it. Now I wash my hair in the kitchen sink and barely need to put conditioner in it. It feels great.

Hope this helps.

Hello Amanda Panda

You can use Robert Craig shampoos for hard or extremely hard water. Both are safe for color treated or permed hair. I have used Robert Craig products for years and never been disappointed in any of them.

Read about the products at:

Hope this helps. ;)

Amanda; Ask your Stylist to recommend the correct shampoo for you.

You Guy`s just because one poo & conditioner works well for one person doesn`t mean that it will work on another...Hair and skin types are vastly different, throw in different water, chemical processes, environmental effects and a persons general health and you end up with a hundred different recommendations.

Your right Amanda, Clarifying and Chelating shampoos are not great on colored hair, in most cases, but then mineral buildup is not good either. The minerals will jam itself into hair, kicking everything else out, especially color. Getting a sealer after your color can help.

The best thing would be a water filtering system. This can be expensive but as conserned as you guy`s seem to be about your hair maybe even taking the time to wash with bottled water could be an option??? :)

I feel that I have hard water, and where I`m moving to will also. What shampoo(s) can I use? I know some of you said chelating and clarifying, but I can`t use those, my hair has just been colored. I think they will strip the color.

I left Germany 7 months ago and know exactly what you mean. I used a combination of clarifying and tea tree oil shampoos, and used a rich conditioner after every wash. I also used Weleda sweet almond oil for hair oil.
For local brands, look for Guhl - good stuff - especially the coconut conditioner, also,Timotei which is a good all round shampoo.

The buildup of calcium, lime and minerals on shower enclosures, in washing machines, and electric kettles is amazingly fast - and there`s all sorts of products to get rid of it.

Lastly, if you can get access to a condensing dryer - a clothes dryer that doesn`t need a vent - the water from clothes all winds up in a tank - use the water from the tank - it`s the last rinse water left in your clothes - and it has almost all of the minerals taken out - it was the only water I would use in my iron.....

Anyway - hope this helps -

depending on how much time and effort you want to spend on your hair, you might want to try bottled water when washing. yes, i know this sounds silly, but i was in germany for two years
and the water TRASHED my hair. at the time i did not know it was the water, then someone doropped me this hint.

Lyris gives EXCELLENT advice. A sure sign of hard water is your shampoo stops lathering as it once did.

A friend recently tried the Robert Craig travel kit and raved about it. She must travel frequently for work and this neat little kit includes test strips that allow you to test the water and match your shampoo to its mineral content. Very clever and it worked very well for her. You might try it ($19.95) and see if your hair will respond to a cleansing shampoo. I have never been disappointed in any Robert Craig product.

Good luck! ;)

What effects have you noticed? Often in hard water minerals will build up on your hair, weighing it down and generally making it dull-looking. If that`s the problem you`re having, try a chelating shampoo. This is a cleanser that removes minerals and keeps them from attaching to your hair. They key is the shampoo must have a chelating agent (most commonly, Sodium EDTA) high up in the ingredient list to be effective. I hope this helps.

I live in Germany right now, and I will be here for the next two years. The water is really Hard here, and I know that it has taken some effect on my hair. Can anyone recommend some treatments to help my hair? Thanks
