The trick is to keep your wave pattern together without breaking it up. Have you tried using lots and lots of conditioner to help the wave pattern stick together? Adding a second, light conditioner such as Suave Naturals will help. (You would end up doing shampoo, conditioner 1, conditioner 2)

Wavies will probably want to avoid combs and brushes (opt for fingers instead). A leave-in conditioner might help too.

I have wavy hair, and I want to style it so it looks messy/ but wavy, and when I do it, it  looks like I just woke up! Can you guys give me some tips?
