QuoteReplyTopic: Care of extensions question Posted: November 07 2005 at 11:15am
I've never had extensions and had never considered them before finding this board! But, of course, you ladies have piqued my interest. My question is regarding daily care of extensions. I've been reading posts for a couple months now, so I know the basics. What I want to know is if caring for your extensions is a pain in the butt - is it harder than caring for your natural hair? I wash, condition, put in smoothing product and gel and let air dry. Sometimes I will flat iron once it is dry. My hair is wavy with frizz on the top.

Great question! I, too, had never thought of using extensions prior to
reading about them on this board. I initially inquired about clip-ins, but
am now getting really excited about using the Proflex sandwiching
method. My stylist wants to help me with this so she can learn as well.
I'm planning on using the really good quality human hair when I do mine.
It sounds like the Proflex method lasts a good five weeks if you care for it
properly. Can I get a root touch-up during that five weeks? My stylist
uses Schwarzkopf permanent color and 10% volume developer. I'm
guessing that one could do a careful touch-up as long as all the product
was washed out after, but I'd love to know from someone who has used
Proflex and permanent color that it works okay.
What about styling products? My hair is fine and straight and I usually
have to use products to build up the volume, but I'm expecting the
extensions to give me a lot more volume. Maybe I won't need products
with the extensions? I'm looking to end up with a chin-to-shoulder
length long shag style. How will I give my new hair a little bend? Can I
blow-dry with a round brush? Hot rollers? Curling iron?
I know that it is better not to wash too often, which works well with my
hair because it isn't oily. When I do wash, can I use conditioner? I usually
use Schwarzkopf Color Care Herbal Sealer when I wash.
I have to say, this is one of the coolest boards I've ever read, and the
people here really rock! I never knew that there was hope for my fine
straight hair without having to wear a wig, hairpiece or clip-ins! Thanks
in advance for answering my questions.
(I also want to apologize for asking questions that have been asked
before. There is so much information on this board that it is hard when
one is new to extensions to sort out what information specifically applies
to a particular method. I've tried to read all the 101 stuff but am a little
overwhelmed at the moment.)

synth i think you have to care very vell, thats the reason why i dont
like it soo much. but good quality HH is the same like "normal long"
hair. just wath tabgles says, it takes a bit longer to dry.
I personally think my extensions are easier to care for than my natural hair. I wash everyother day, sometimes go 3 days. I do usually get my hair soaking wet everyday though. I put some frizzezz in, dry the roots and my bang area and out the door I go!!! So much faster and easier than trying to add body and style to my fine limp locks. If I am going out at night, sometimes I will curl the length of my hair or straighten it. I have some much versitlity now.
As for products I use, I use a good moisturizing shampoo and conditioner and then I use frizz-eazz and a curl enhancer. Thats all, simple and fast!!
I went from spending 5 minutes on my hair in the morning to spending 1/2 hour. I used to just blow dry my hair. Now I blow dry and curl. There is more hair, so it takes longer to dry and I have to blend (since my extension hair is curly and my hair is straight).
