First off is your hair damaged? Do you have split ends, breakage, dryness?

Is your hair relaxed or natural?

My hair is relaxed, I don't have split ends b/c I usually get my hair trimmed once I take out my braids. I use heat when I take my braids out with a blow dryer.

Your saying that your hair will not grow past a certian length. This is usually due to breakage. When you take out your braids how much do you trim off? Besides split ends is your hair dry our breaking other wise. Like if you brush it do you see any short hairs coming out?

We have to figure out why your hair is not growing past a certian length in order to help you.

How long is your hair now? Is it healthy?

Yes I cut it real short last year like nia long  now it is right under my ear. Whe I go to get my ends trim I just tell her to cut the split ends and trim it up. Yes my hair is dry and i do see short hairs when I brush or comb it

Ok first things first. You need to create a simple regimen for yourself. This should include:

  1. A Moisturizing Shampoo (Ex. Cream of Nature Moist. and Condi.)
  2. A Moisturizing Conditioner (Nexxus Humectant)
  3. A Hair Moisturizer (Shea Butter, Coconut Oil)

Shampoo hair once a week, then condition. Lastly moisturize and let dry.

If you are seeing more than 1 or 2 short hairs (breakage) when you brush or comb your hair this a sign that your hair is damaged. When I had a relaxer and combed through my hair I would get tens of broken hair coming out. Now that my hair is 5x healthier the only hairs that comb out when I comb or brush are natural shedding hairs. The longer these hairs are to your actual length the worse your breakage is. (Ex. If your hair is 5inches long and you have 4 inch broken hairs you are in big trouble)

So next question would be: How many short hairs do you see and how short or long are they?

Dryness. Relaxed hair needs to be moisturized. Because relaxing dries out already dry hair types. Start by deep conditioning your hair once a week and then as you hairs health improves lengthen it to twice a month. Dry hair can cause breakage. Also excessive braiding and other styles can cause breakage as well.

Hair grows an average of 1/2 inch a month if you are cutting off that much or more a month you hair length will not progress. If your hair is healthy you should only have to trim 3 to 4 times a year.

Shea Butter? It depends on how much you use.

So back to you original question. There are three reason why you hair could not be growing past a certian length.

  1. Your hair is breaking off faster than it is growing.
  2. You are trimming or cutting you hair off more than it is growning.
  3. Your hair is not growing. (You have reached your max length. Which doubt since you claim that you hair was longer in the past)

So what do you think your problem is?

It must be breaking off faster than it is growing

Do you ever do protein treatments or deep conditioning treatments?  That should help with breakage.  I usually do a protein and deep conditioning treatment monthly, sometimes I deep condition more than that.  I use Ion for protein treatments and Lekair Cholesterol Plus for deep con.  You should also moisturize at least every other day.  How often do you use heat to style?

gurl that is your problem- leave the heat alone. wear your hair curly/natural or wear a phonypony/phonybun or a ponytail or a bun when you are not in braids. And moisturize, moisturize, moisturize.

  • Heat/Thermal Damage: - Caused by overly hot or overuse of heat styling appliances that dry out hair and cause flyaways. Heat appliances such as blow-dryers or curling irons can over dry the hair. Hair requires a natural level of moisture to remain soft and flexible. Over dry hair will be brittle and susceptible to breakage. Leave-in treatments can help protect hair from heat damage.

  • Heat from appliances like curling or flat irons soften the keratin of the hair (the principal protein in hair). Too much heat can actually cause the water in the hair to boil, forming tiny bubbles of steam inside the softened hair shaft and causing the cuticle scales to permanently bubble. The hair becomes brittle and weak and may break off. Keep hair dryers at least 10-15 centimeters from the hair, and constantly moving to avoid over-heating the hair.
  •

Signs of Heat or other damage

    • Hair looks dull and lack-luster
    • Hair feels dry and brittle to the touch
    • Hair is difficult to comb because it is always tangled
    • Hair is flyaway and has split ends
    • Hair is hard to manage and may be difficult to style

I highly recommend that you stop using heat on your hair. Why would you want to damage already damaged hair. Don't even think about taking a heat appliance to your hair until it is completly healthy again.

Try doing monthly protien treatments and weekly deep conditioning. Again stay away from heat. Also try wearing protetives styles such as buns or cornrows. Keep your ends moisturized to help prevent split ends.

you might need a protein treatment like Poka said and maybe you need to start doing hot oil treatments once a week.  Dont apply heat to your hair unless its been washed.  It could cause more damage

Yeah, you really need to cut down on the heat.  That will help a whole lot.  When your hair gets healthy enough to use heat make sure to always use a good heat protectant.  I use Beyond the Zone and it works very well, Fantasia IC also has one.  A lot of ladies like Motions CPR protein treatment.  I tried it and I love it.  I suggest you do at least monthly protein treatments and lots of deep con treatments until your hair gets back on track.  Moisturize often, trust me it does wonders.....and trim off those dead/damaged ends.  Try to find styles that require little to no heat, you will really benefit from this.

ETA...always deep condition after you do protein treatments.

I agree with everybody on the heat. My hair is growing wonderfully, and I can't even tell you where my hairdryer and curling iron is. I haven't used them in over a year.
