QuoteReplyTopic: Tired of hair - need ideas! *PIC* Posted: February 06 2006 at 2:08pm
hey guys,
I AM SO TIRED OF MY HAIR! this happens from time to time - i get my
hair back to normal and it looks silky and shiny and then i want to mess
with it and screw it up!
anyway, my hair's been dyed to a dark golden brown (preference by
l'oreal) over clairol demiperm colorgloss in dark ash brown (level 2A). the
ends are SUPERDARK, from buildup, and the roots, about 2 1/2 inches are
reddish gold in sunlight. i've always thought superdark hair suited me,
but now i think i am ready for a dramatic change, provided i
can do it on my own. i can colorfix (is it too damaging?) and then do a
color over that (would it have to be a demiperm?). would i have to cut too
much off? i've been growing it long and wouldn't want to lose the length...
what color should i try? here's a picture of me. i'd like to know
what you think would be a good change and what steps to take to get it!
Hi, lovely pic.
You have dark eyes and colouring (cool category), so in my opinion I
would suggest you stay relatively dark - I would not suggest you go
blonde or anything too extreme.
I think your hair would look stunning in a slightly lighter brown,
perhaps coffee/cappuccino, with a selection of lighter brown subtle
highlights. I'm not quite sure how you would achieve this look at
home without enormous effort though...
You can use Colorfix - it's fine, much less damaging than bleach.
It will lift your colour to a light/medium brown, but it will have a
lot of brassiness in it. If you want to go a bit red then you
won't need to worry about the brassiness as much - but if you don't
want any red at all (which is what may suit you best), you're going to
need to use ash brown tones to counter the orange/red - and it makes
things a hell of a lot more difficult!
However, just because you have cool colouring it doesn't mean you won't
look amazing with red tones in the brown too. There's so much you
can do with brown hair, and there's so much choice.
you know, i've always wondered if i'm "cool" or "warm"
- i look pale there cause it's winter, but in the summer i get very tan
(olive, because i'm spanish/italian). a lot of hairdressers are always telling
me i should do red "panels" (i don't know what those are) - but lately i've
been thinking red would be cool. but how to pull it off without looking
too crazy? i need to look suitable at the office!
also, i must confess - i've ALWAYS wanted to go for blonde, but have
always been confused about what shade would look good for me. i've
read that there's a shade of blonde for everyone, but i just need to find
mine, i guess. and that seems like a task for a pro, right?
could i do colorfix and then tone with a light ash brown? would i do a
perm or a semiperm over that?
Well, I've done it myself, I colorfixed my dyed black hair and the
result was mid/light orangey brown. It was bearable but I have
light natural blonde roots so they looked dreadful! I dyed it
with Nice N Easy Light Ash Brown perm colour, and my hair was WAY TOO
POROUS....it grabbed the colour at the sides and tips of my hair, and
left my roots almost untouched. Honestly it was so annoying!
To give Nice N Easy some credit, a lot of the brassiness disappeared on
the hair, but now it's fading and I'll need to sort it out.
So, with that, I'd recommend you either get a good permanent and strand
test (not nice n easy!), or use a semi and strand test to see how long
you'll need to leave it on for to get the most pleasing results.
But beware semi fades a lot.
To be honest though you may not need to use a light ash brown if you are thinking about red.
Good luck anyways! You'll definitely need to Colorfix first, and you may even need to bleach if you want red panels.

If you are truly considering blonde, I don't know if I'd completely trust a pro. Although they are very knowledgeable, they do tend to do what they THINK is best. Many times it ends up being their opinion. I'm not knocking any professionals out there. Opinion is human nature. I've been told many times to go golden blonde and I can't stand it on myself. I'm always happier with ash tones, no matter the level of blonde.
What I would do is grab your closest girlfriend or you sig other.....someone who's opinion you trust. Go to a wig salon and find a similar hairstyle and try on several tones and shades of blonde. YOU can literally form your own opinion and gather the one of the person you brought as well. It is so hard to put color back into blonde once you've done it. This board is riddled with those of us trying like hell to get color back in our hair! I'd hate for you to be unhappy with your choice based on what you're told 'might' look good.

I think trying the wigs is a great idea.I know I have similar coloring to you.I'm a cool skintone, with dark hair, and I tan very easily (from being half american indian). I know personally reds can look really good.If your going to go blonde I'd stay in the more darker tones and ash range.I know anything with yellow washes me out really bad. And I think it would be the same for you.The best blonde I had was full foil highlights with a dark layer underneath for depth.Which I'm thinking about doing again cause it looked so good.Good luck
