    Posted: February 18 2006 at 10:33am

Hello!

Yesterday, I got extensions for the 1st time.   They are 18" HairDreams and thermal fusion (180 degrees?) was used to apply them.  My total coast was $1800 (incl removal and shampoo) for 200 pieces of hair.

I am a little worried (however, since this is my first time, I don't know what to expect) that the extensions seem thinner than I'd planned.  The extensions seem like they do not have as much volume as my natural hair.  I'm not sure if that is because my hair is so mush shorter than the end-length, or if because there were not enough pieces put in.  My natural hair, at its shortest point is 5" in lenth because I'm growing out a bob.

My hair dresser said that after a few washes, the silicon will come out and the hair will expand, so I'm not super nervouse yet, but thought I'd ask for a second opinion.

My hairdresser did not use all of the hair, and I'm wondering if that is a normal occurance? Is it true that the hair will increase in volume after I am able to wash it?

I really appreciate your help!

Yes the hair does look fuller after its washed. You said she did not use all of the strands...so how much was left over?

About a a quarter to a third of it from what I could tell.

I suppose it's possible that he started with more on the tray than the 200 pieces, but since my hair was feeling thin, I'd wondered if that was played into it at all.

Thank you very much for the help!

its really hard to say whether or not enough hair was used without seeing a picture. And not knowing if your natural hair is thick or thin, or any of the other variables...its hard to say without seeing it.

IF the stylist did not use all the hair you paid for- what will she do with it? will she file it away for safe keeping?

why didnt she install all of it?

That sounds a little scary to me.  I hope that when the silicon comes out it won't leave the hair a tangly mess like BSS hair.

Well, I am glad to know I'm not 100% paranoid!

This particular hair dresser has been doing extensions for 20+ years, and this particular method for over 7, so I'm hoping his experience is trustworthy.

I'm going to wash it today (I have not yet, per his advice) and see how it goes!

On shorter hair of hair that has been cut into a bob hairstyle, it is necessary to use a lot of extension hair to get a seamless blend.  Those two situations always make for a  more difficult extension job, but if you use enough hair and go high enough on the head, then it should look good.

So after a few washings, if you don't think it's full enough, for that ridiculous high price you paid, she should put more extensions in for you.

My hair is very similar, very short, growing out a short cut, and this is the
problem I've had with my last few installs (then again, I am doing it
myself, so I would think someone with 20+ years of experience could do
much much better!!) In the end, almost all of my hair is in a bond, but it
still looks thin.

What I've found helps, is going a little shorter (my first install was only
12" and it looked a little bit thicker and fuller, but when I tried 26", it
looked horribly thin) Not sure why...Also, I found with lots of pretipped
hair I have to double it up and try fitting as much hair in the bond as I
comfortably can.

I would say if you are paying, and that's not exactly cheap, that you
should atleast go ask him and see if he can help you or has some
explanation.

Thanks so much everyone!  I washed it yesterday, and it helped a little.

Since I had mentioned at the salon that it felt a little thin, I just left him a polite message saying that it's a bit better after washing it, and that I was going to wash it a few more times.  If it didn't fill out a bit more, then I wanted to talk to him about putting the rest of the extensions in.

I am hoping, being that he's been in business for awhile and for the price I paid, he will want to assist where he can.  I'm taking some of the before and after pics from this website with me!  WOW, there are some seriously talented extensionalists here!  (Why can't any of you live in North Dallas, heh?)

Pretty picture:)

To me, it looks like your stylist should have put them up higher to blend better...

Thanks!

That's kinda what I was hoping for.

Maybe he could go and put a few more rows towards the top? I actually have pretty thick hair, and there is more than enough to cover the attach points and still add a bit more.  I have a lot of my own hair sitting ontop of the extenstions.

I hope I didn't offend him with the message I left.  I guess he'll be asking himself "what did she mean.. the REST of them?"  I guess I am just assuming that he would use as many extensions as he could.. and since it felt a bit thin and there was hair left....  I would assume there is the option to put in a few more if the result didn't give the volume.

It does look very pretty! But I do agree that there could have been more installed near the top. Most extensionists who care about keeping there clients will try to make it right and make you happy!

I wanted to follow up... since I'm sure there are enough crazy stories about people NOT being happy... I have a cool update.

I called my extenstionalist and expressed minor concern, and he demanded that I come back in to look at it because he wanted me to *love* them.  When I arrived, he agreed and added a lot more extensions... and now I'm SOOO happy.  They look JUST like what I had envisioned before I went to the salon.  I will post pix as soon as I find them!!

Since everyone is different, I really appreciate working with someone  who is open to feedback and ultimately just wants his/her client to be satisfied.  Yippeee!
