i actually dont know. people say dominicans are better because they use less heat and have beautiful long hair. there methods are different and they aren't sisscors happy.

I thought a Dominican Blowout was were they used crazy amounts of heat to make your hair look good. I thought they used more heat on people's hair than usual. I remember women posting of how it actually hurt when they got their hair done.

NO Offense to any Dominicans but i live in NYC and
theres a huge Dominican population here and I have
been to 2 different Dominican hairdressers and they
both DESTROYED my hair when i was a young and
naive about hair, the first was when i was 15 i
received my first relaxer and it didnt come out good
at all( maybe my hair was resistant) and then i went
back and had someone else relax it,, anyway
months down the line my hair which was thick and
waist length was up to my shoulders and FRIED
terribly and i was a dumb kid and didnt realize my
mistakes and while my hair was damaged i still
could have saved some length but this Dominican
hairdresser(who didnt have much hair herself )
cuts my hair sooooo short,, i couldnt deal with that
so i went looking for a place to do extensions and
ended up at another Dominican! lol well not only did
she do heinous weaves(again i didnt realize this out
of lack of experience) but she began relaxing my hair
and overlapping and i suffered horrendous
breakage( think mullet)( again her hair was torn up
and she had expressed how she wished she had
my hair),, it was only when she moved that i was
able to break free which was about 2 years ago and
my hair has been growing back lovely ever since,,
anyway i am phobic of Dominican hairdressers and
hairdressers in general,, I mean I dont trust them
esp the ones that have some torn up hair and i have
to sit there in fear that they might even be
vindictive.....
Hair type: 3b some c?, fine strands, last relaxer sept 05, never again!!! current :ap length on sides,,nearly bsl in back, damn those old frazzled ends! I am hair OBSESSED

Most dominicans are heavily mixed with Latin people, so it would make sense that their hair would be closer to latina in length and texture. The best thing to consider when going to a salon is YOUR hair, and have them do what's best for YOUR hair and your texture, not try to get it to look like someone else's.
That's almost like deciding to go to a colorist because she has gorgeous red hair, and you would like your hair that color. For different reasons, that person's hair may easily get that color when your own may not.
Hair type: who knows?
Length: 23 inches as of 3/10/06
MY HAIR IS OFFICIALLY BRA STRAP LENGTH!!
Goal: Waist Length, which is only 30 inches so
ADVISE ME ON HOW TO GET JUST 7 MORE INCHES OF GROWTH!

I thought that same thing. Those blowout's use intense amounts of heat and tension to straighten the hair. I've even heard horror stories of the hair being burned off getting this done. I know I'll never have it done because blow dryers (in my opinion) is one of the worst forms of heat.
I used to get a blowout on a weekly basis and it can
hurt so bad that your eyes will tear up if they dont aim
that damn nozzle right but the worst pain i can ever
remember was at a Dominican salon with an
inexperienced haidresser,, she was very sweet and
barely spoke any english( not sure that she was
Dominican though) but HOT DAMN her blowouts hurt
Renata,, Dominicans are island Latinos,, they are
the same as Puerto Ricans etc. only they tend to
have more black blood,, you will find a lot of
"mullatos" among them but I have met literally blue
eyed blonde haired Dominicans in high school.. and
there are many jews among them who came during
the Holocaust.....

Dominican blowouts do contain a lot of heat, but if you think about it, if you go to a dominican hair dresser, they only use a hooded dryer and a blow dryer whereas in other salons, Dryers, Blowdrier, flat iron, curling irons and pressing combs are all used on your hair at once.

i dont see why any1 would consider using so much heat. after reading about what all that heat can do to your hair, might as well just stay away from it all together and find something that is less harsh.

Okay everybody, quick history...I live in Miami and go to the Dominican Republic at least once a month....Dominicans are a mix of African, native island, and Spanish. Depending on how much african they may have, their hair type is very much like ours. The Dominican blowout is very popular because by using a combo of rollersetting and blowdrying with a round brush, you can get a very nice final result. Also the deep conditioners that come from the Dom. Rep. are usually very good too. IMO the method does not use more or worse heat than other salons, but you get more body from the rollersetting and it is unusual to find any salon who is willing to spend that much time to let you hood dry. That is why some people prefer Dominican salons.

sounds like the same thing they do in non-Dominican owned salons to me.
I can't say anything about the conditioners, because I've never used them.
Dominicans in Atlanta, that I've personally seen and met anyways, are CLEARLY more latin than African.

Twinkletoes: I think if you can find a dominican salon to go to, I would give it a try, at least once, to see how you like the results. Because Dominicans have many different types and textures of hair, they are familiar with both more coarse and more smooth hair, and the methods/products they use will get your hair very straight and silky. I would try just a wash and set, nothing major and see how you like it.
Renata22: I have been to their country and can tell you personally, dominicans are all different shapes, sizes, colors and hair types, just like we are...

I think if you are interested in Dominican Salons...maybe you are able to find one in your area. There aren't any here, so I guess I won't be visiting one anytime soon.
Also, I have Dominican friends and they come in variations of shades and hair textures just as African Americans here.
