Monoi Oils

I did braid it myself. Thank you for the compliment. :-) The only good answer I can give you is practice, practice, practice! My hair was shorter (between shoulder and BS) when I learned to french braid. I`m sure that helped. Do you know the basic technique? There are directions here:

This may be in the article (I haven`t read it), but it is easier to braid hair that is not freshly washed and dried. Practice on dirty or damp hair. It really isn`t difficult once you "get" the idea of how it is done. I usually let go and smooth the hair as I braid. I wish I could explain that better, but I move all of the hair to one hand, being careful not to mix the strands and pick up the sides and length of the new hair I`m incorporating into the braid, then while holding the new hair in one hand, drop the strand I`m adding it to into that hand, smoothing it all again before adding it to the braid. (I hope I didn`t lose you there!) If the hand movements described in the article don`t work for you, try to figure out some that do.

Anyway, in answer to Spaci32 and Turquoise_girl....the thing to remember with Monoi oil is "less is more." Try this: (with clean hands!) hold your open bottle of Monoi in one hand. Put the palm of your other hand over the opening. Tilt the bottle into your palm and then upright it. Whatever is in your hand is probably all you`ll need (unless you`re doing a hot oil treatment or heavy oiling before shampooing). Rub your hands together and gently apply the oil to your hair length and ends. If you find that that is still too much, play with the amount. It`s really a personal thing. You can do this to wet or dry hair (you`ll probably use less if you apply it to wet hair). If you don`t like oiling your hair while wearing it down, try it in an updo (it will condition your hair all day :-) ). Or just use it for hot oil treatments or heavy oiling at bedtime before shampooing the next day.

is it possible to overuse oils on your hair? how much should you be putting on? sometimes it seems that if i put on a lot then my hair looks kinda dull the next day. maybe the oils have collected dust and dirt? i just don`t want to be causing more harm than good b/c i overused silicone serum a while back and it really dried out my hair.

I love Monoi oil! I`ve been using it for well over a year now. I`ve known a few people who`ve experienced increased dryness after using it for extended periods, but I`ve never had that problem. I use a number of different oils, though, so that might have something to do with it.

I`ve used Monoi on wet hair and dry. I really like it for a hot oil treatment and add it to my homemade deep conditioner. I also use it as a body oil for moisturizing after a shower. Great stuff! Enjoy it! :-)

I don`t personally use Monoi Oil but I know of at least 3 women who do. Each of them has somewhat dry hair (one is coarse and color treated) and the Monoi Oil has made a big difference in the condition of their hair. They all use it more this time of year since the humidity is quite a bit lower and their hair has a tendency to be even drier. My best advice for the use of Monoi Oil is: less is more. A little bit goes a long way. I hope it works as well for you as it does them.
