I just wanted some input.
How do you guys take care of your hair when you
go on vacation and you go swimming?
Usually I end up going in the ocean and parts of my hair
get wet. How can I make sure the salt water will not break
my hair?
I have a pool at my house. What I do is before I get in the pool I wet
my hair and put leave-in conditioner on it. My hair still gets a little
dry from the chlorine but not as bad as it would if I didn't do this.
When I was relaxed, I would usually air dry after this so I wouldn't
stress my hair out any more.
Type: 3c/4a Natural
Current Length: 6"
Goal: Healthy, tip of nose /neck/shoulder length hair.

well wearing leave in CO is a good idea. but other than that, just wash your hair afterwards, i dont think you can really do anything to completely shield it from the sun or water. and swimming caps dont work, at least in my own experience. the water leaked through. besides, you should be able to have fun in the sun without worrying if your hair is all bunched up in an ugly cap!

I forgot about that...if your hair is too long, it probably won't fit under the cap anyways. Sorry!

Well I'm a swimmer and let me just say that swim caps are not made to keep your hair from getting wet! They're made to prevent sun damage, hair from getting into your face, and to help competitive swimmers go faster..(hair slows you down)! Do not believe anyone that tells you a swim cap will stop your hair from getting wet. This is only true if your shoulders stay above water. If you are going to wear a cap, rinse your hair in water.. and spray on a leave in .. afterwards be sure to take the swim cap off from the back so it doesn't pull out your hairs.. then wash with a clarifying shampoo(this part is important)!!.. condition..and whatever you usually do(you may also want to put a few braids in before you put on the cap too). Ive had to deal with countless years of swimming..so dont make the mistakes I did or you'll wind up lookin a hot mess! HTH

I'm guessing I'd have to wash everytime I come from the
water so is there one that will not dry my hair out?

Yeah you would have to wash everytime you get out of the water,if you don't your asking for breakage, drying, and TROUBLE. A lot of the ladies suggest Suave, White Rain, and Eluence Clarifiers. Theres a topic on clarifying shampoos, try looking it up. Right now, I'm using Pantene Purity, its pretty harsh with ingredients, but it definitely gets the job done! ..I guess it's meant to strip hair so it probably does dry out. I'm not sure exactly if that or the new conditioner I used dried my hair out once. I also suggest KeraCare 1st Lather Shampoo!

You can wash it after you get back to the room. Then the salt water won't break it. That is what i did in Hawaii last summer. No problems at all. I also put it into two braids on the side.
Swim caps are dangerous. I always ended up ripping hair out trying to get them on and off. They never kept the water out either. I think they are more for speed swimming. (reducing the speed lost by the hair being free underwater)

This is because you probably failed to put it on right and/or didn't take it off correctly. The logo printed on the cap should always be on the side..not the front..and the ripples should line the middle of your head. You should wet the cap before putting it on amyhow!! Oh and if your really afraid of getting your hair snapped off..try putting just a little powder on the inside and let it sit the nite before you go swimming

My ability to put it on correctly is not the problem; I know how to put it on the right way. I need to get one that is designed to hold long hair (when I get a chance) so it doesn't pull as much. I want/need something like the Speedo Stretch Fit

Yeah you could try getting a different swim cap. I'm sorry. Didn't mean to be rude or anything. You're hair is really long, have you tried braiding loose braids and putting them into place with a pin? And if it is pulling you should be careful with taking it off. I've only noticed pulling when you take it off from the front instead of the back.
I didn't think you were rude. I just like using => (;) semicolons instead of using words like and, and because sometimes. It makes sentences seem abrumpt though.
I've tried it like how I wear my wigs but it still snaps. I braid one braid on each side then wrap them around the back of my head to the front or vise versa. I haven't been taking it of from back to front. I'm going to try that.

I can't say anything about the other clarifiers, but be careful using the Suave clarifying shampoo, because that drieds my hair during a regular wash. I can't imagine how dry it would make hair that's had chlorine in it.

what products did you use to keep your hair clean? Did you do a clarifying shampoo and then condition/deep condition?
I just washed it with my regular shampoo, Cream of Nature Professional Detangling and Conditioning Shampoo. (in the tan bottle with the tan top) That shampoo is the only product I ever use to wash my hair. I put in the Infusium 23 Leave In treatment afterwards and that was it. I've never clarified my hair before, nor have I ever deep conditioned. They don't seem to be necessary (my hair's fine with just the shampoo I use from the looks and feel of it).
If you think you've got toxins in your hair and/or you fear damage from toxins, don't take my example on this. Clarify if you think you will need it.
