sorry that this is so long..
i really need some advice about my hair color disaster!
backround info: im in highschool.. & my appearance is very important as you probably can understand. my natural hair color is dirty blonde. i had it highlighted for the first time last summer.. but it wasnt very noticeable so i never get my roots touched up.
kind of a long story.. sorry
the problem: i recently decided i wanted light/medium brown hair. i used a color that was suposably a dark blonde color.. but to me it looked brown. when i dyed my hair it turned out almost excatly what i had wanted. after a couple days the color started to fade dramaticly. so i went back to the store and bought a darker brown color because i figured it too would fade and end up the color i wanted. (i dont remember any of the actual color names its been a little while) well my hair turned out a VERY dark brown (almost black) with a very noticable redish tint. it was way too dark for my skintone and look horrible! i stayed home from school & my mom called lots of different salons.. most said they wouldnt be able to do anything because i had dyed my hair twice in a week. finally i found a 'color correction specialist'. she got me in right away.. and put a bleach cap on my hair.. but she was very reluctant about it and didnt leave it in very long. after that she dyed it (again not sure what color) but when she was done it was a copperish-orangeish-blondish-brownish color. i hate it! i mean it might look good on some people but not me!! (i think the actual color correction specialist handed me off to one of her beginners.. because i believe it was possible to get the results i wanted) my hair is in very good condition for all its been through. its been about a month and my roots are starting to show & id like to do something before they grow out much more.
please give me some advice!

Well, the first thing they should have done was remove the dye you put on (with a permanent dye remover such as Colorfix). That would leave your hair a bit orangish, but then they could have put a lighter dye of the same level on top of it. I think their bleaching was unnecessary, but then again I don't know everything that happened. If she put a permanent dye on it you can remove it yourself with Colorfix and then dye it a light brown of the same level. If you want to reduce the damage use a demi-permanent, and to cancel the orange/yellow use an ash color (if using an otc haircolor). Refer to the sticky about "Haircoloring Intro to Color..." on the haircolor forum. Let us know how things go! :)
go here: http://hairboutique.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=40328& PN=1 It has useful information about how hair color works. And here's Clairol's level chart.

Often times, demi-permanent color will last longer than permanent color on porous hair(since the permanent faded easily last time)...and if it does end up washing out easily, at least you can experiment without quite as much damage.
You see, this is precisely why it says do a test strand on the instructions
But I know how you feel. I was always impatient and ended up
having my hair allsorts of crazy colours at school that either looked
cool or ridiculous due to not doing a test strand.
Now my hair is a normal medium brown and it's soooo boring - so now I'm at college I'm gonna dye it intense dark red
I think Meli's advice pretty much says it all, it's what I'd have done anyway.
