QuoteReplyTopic: SALONS GROW OUT YUR HAIR??? Posted: April 04 2006 at 8:25pm
ive heard from a lot of black women that going to a beauty shop consistently helps yur hair grow out faster and healthier. is this tru?? i knew 1 gurl who had very short, jagged hair and after about 8-9 months of going to a salon every 2 weeks for a wash and flat iron, she had beautiful full hair. has anyone else expereinced this or know why it works? maybe it works because the person doing it knows what they are doing better than us!lol
It all depends on the stylist. If he/she understands African American hair and knows that chemicals and excessive heat is not always the answer, then yeah, a good stylist can grow your hair. But an ok stylist can become a good stylist for you, if you tell them what you want. Tell them that you want your hair only in rollersets or blowdried on medium heat, no relaxers, mild relaxer, whatever. If they are accomodating and willing to listen, then you got a good stylist.
It didn't help me any. My hair started going down hill when I started going to stylists. It was when I started taking care of my hair myself that it started to grow. I only go to the stylist maybe twice a year and I only get braids done. Even when I just get braids done they want to be all up in my hair trying to cut it.
Only one stylist I can think of grew my hair very well and it was healthy. I now recall her when relaxing my hair, starting at the top of my head instead of the back where all other stylist would start relaxing. I now realize why...because of my fine 3c hair in the nape area verses coarse 4a/b in the top. Also I was getting relaxers religiously every 6 weeks, and I remember trying to get a relaxer at 5 1/2 weeks and she made me wait almost 7 weeks because she said it was too soon. No other stylist ever said such, and I was upset at the time. (I know better now).
When I first started going to her she cut my hair into a short bob as a result of another stylist putting permament color in my hair and it was see-thru thin! She would also deep condition me every time and trim my ends every time I got a relaxer. She would always base me before getting the lye relaxer and she didn't leave the relaxer on long. Well, after going to her every 2 weeks for a year and a half my hair grew past shoulder length, even the nape area and it was so shiny. Never before then! I would get a lot of comments on my hair.
I had to stop going to her though because she had started over booking on Saturdays, going to pick up her kid from babysitter while customers were in the shop, arriving late for my appointments, etc. I got tired of that stuff.

I have a very good experience with my current(My old stylist was SCISSOR-happy!) hair stylist.
Since going to her my hair has really grown...she takes good care of my
hair. My hair is very thick and hard to manage. And I can
never duplicate the way it looks when I leave out of the salon.
But in between visits it is essential to take care of your
hair. This is where I messed up! I never took the time to
take care of my hair in between visits...this is SO important!

salonist (good ones) take carre of your hair very nicely and it does become healthy and maybe grows. I've only been to a hairdresser once and she damaged my hair attempting to blowdry my hair...it's never been the same.
Like someone said above, it only works if the hairdresser caters to black hair.
Hair Type- 4a/b *transitioning front of my head*
Length-ranges from 5-7 inches =)
Products- Garnier Fructis S & S Poo, Lustrasilk Shea Butter Mango Conditioner and Cantu-Leave in =)
well i always wondered if there was any truth 2 that, thanx 4 the replies. but hey i aint tryin 2 spend that money on the stylist, ya know?? id rather buy my own stuff and work it out

HI im new to the talk forum thing, but to comment on what Taggi wrote: I have seen the same thing with gals who go to their hairstylist every two weeks or so. Their hair seems to be healthy, lengthy and shiney...too expensive, im in college(pockets be broke). I have never tried going on the regular myself, maybe i should since my hair isnt progressing with my help alone.

My hair grows better since I've been seeing my stylist, and I only see her 2-3 times a year. Now that I'm working (just started), I may start to go once every other month for a while and see if I get better results.
Hair type: who knows?
Length: 23 inches as of 3/10/06
MY HAIR IS OFFICIALLY BRA STRAP LENGTH!!
Goal: Waist Length, which is only 30 inches so
ADVISE ME ON HOW TO GET JUST 7 MORE INCHES OF GROWTH!
I am going to go with on depending on what stylist you go to. One stylist (i.e. Reneice) who seems to hair on healthy hair techniques and stylist like her can lend a helping hand in achieveing your hair growing goals. Then there are others who only care about styling the hair and use all the lastest tools to make your hair "LOOK" its best, but not neccessary feel its best. More like artist than anything.
