My mom used to have really thick hair when she was younger, but trouble started when one of her older sisters put in a HEAVY perm (Back then they used to put Lye in the perms so..)and it fried her hair.(About 25 years ago) The thing is, she did not need such an heavy perm and plus my aunt did not follow the directions to good and well, you kinda get the picture. She tried several products but they did nothing; and she has split ends like a trees roots. She has trouble with mosture, breakage and uneven growth. Mom even forced me to cut her hair with my clippers. (And yes it was weird cuttting my own mothers hair, but strangely enjoyable lol) But after a year and a half, her hair came back exactly like it was before I cut it down. I really hope I don't have to cut my mothers hair again; just strange The worst part of her hair is her kitchen, won't grow for nothing! The salonist over here don't know anything; shoot, even I know more than they do and I know basically nothing about womens hair.(kinda reason why I am here so I can put another knowlege point on my belt)

Is there any hope for my poor old mother???

Hmmm...that is strange.  Usually the hair recovers from something like that within in a year or so (granted hair is dead material so it can't feel anything).  I think this might be something medical, but I could be wrong.  Does your mother have a medical condition such as diabetes, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, etc?  Basically anything that may require medication to control it?  Sometimes medication can affect how the hair grows or the texture.

*Reverses*

No medical conditions, just that my moms hair is really dry and will absorb any moisture that hits it in a instant. Her basically laughts at hair mayonese, and she used the whole bottle! I notice she only moisturizes her hair like once a week and I think that is a problem. I know we have Asian and Indian down the line in our family line but I think that should of worn off by now......I guess...I learned from this site that heat is bad and she does blow dry her hair after a perm.....Could this be one of many problems??

Well if her hair is naturally dry, then blowing your hair, especially on high temperatures isn't the best thing she is doing.  I would suggest that she use a gentle moisturizing shampoo like Creme of Nature(green label), Elasta QP creme shampoo or the one for relaxed hair, or Elucence moisturizing balancing shampoo.  Just a short list.

And moisturizing conditioners that might help her hair: Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Pak conditioner (cheapest I have seen it at the Family Dollar store.  Comes in packets, get more than one), Creme of Nature Nourishing conditioner (deep purple label), Elucence Moisture Balancing conditioner, Elasta QP Intense conditioner or the DPR-11.  Again this is just a short list since there are plenty of stuff that might work for her.

She should try deep conditioning more often and shampoo her scalp more often.  It may sound contradictory but it could be the fact that she is using shampoos that make her hair drier.  Also she needs to make sure that she rinses her hair after shampooing so that the shampoo residue doesn't dry out her hair.

This is totally optional but she can do some hot oil treatments.  Basically she can purchase some oils already made for hair for hot oil treatments or buy an oil like avocado, olive oil, castor oil, safflower, sunflower, etc and create her own.  She puts the oil of her choice in an applicator bottle (ones used for dyeing the hair) and set it a container of hot tap water for 5 minutes.  Apply the oil on her scalp and massage the oils to the tips.  She can sit under a dryer with a processing cap for about 10 minutes under medium heat or a warm damp towel over her hair for an hour, then proceed to shampoo.

If she feels the need to blow dry the hair, she should use the lowest temperature possible and use a good heat protectant and a bit of leave-in moisturizer.   I hope this helps.

*From out the shadow*

Hmmmm.........

Will those products help on growth and how frequently should she do all of this? And should I/Do I have to cut her hair so it can grow out evenly?

I am sorry for all these questions......

*Shrugs*

I got a feeling she may get nasty and hostile on me(my mother).....

Like every product, hair, skin, what have you, your milage will vary.  The ones I have listed seems pretty popular in most hair groups I have frequented.  But she should try it once a week for about a month or two to see if it will improve her hair condition.  Then she can deep condition like every two weeks or so.  With a moisturizing conditioner I might add.

As for trimming the hair, if she does have splits, a small trim , like 1/2 an inch or so couldn't hurt,  But if it is really damaged, I would suggest cutting off as much of the damaged ends as possible.  Some people like to use Aphogee Treatment (the one that smells like cat pee) to slow down on the breakage, but I must stress that it is a temporary fix.  And when using a product like that, you must follow the instructions to the letter.

Also, if Aphogee Treatment is a PROTEIN treatment, she may only want to use it once or twice a month. My stylist told me that protein treatments can make hair hard or dry it out, and she's glad I don't use them since I have a conditioner with protein.

Naw the treatment smells like cat pee to me but it is temporary, as long as she rinses the treatment very well.  I mean very well.  Then the smell should go away.

*The sun turns blindingly bright then dims back to normal*

I talked to my mom and she refuses to go natural...

So I was reading in the Ebony Magizine and came across an ad called "Dr.Miracle's new Thermalceutical Intensive Relaxer" supposed to be the solution to everything.......I really don't believe it........nothing can be THAT good....right?

Anyone used this stuff??

And some wild growth formula that I ran across a couple seconds ago but I can't find it in the book cause it knows I am looking for it.

Never tried that Dr. Miracle line.  I have tried that Wild Growth Hair oil and basically it just made my hair softer and shinier.  She can purchase that at Sally's.  Cost about 8 bucks for an four ounce bottle.

It's going to be a long hard battle with my mom, trying to convince her to change her harmful ways....

I got a lot against me........

1st. I am male

2nd.I am way younger

3rd.She is very cranky cause she is going through menopause! Poor dad I really feel sorry for him

4. It's her hair!.......I learned really young to never mess with a girls hair.........especially a girls black hair.....

But If I buy this stuff for her and no money out of her pocket she just might try it......I don't think I will try the cat pee stuff yet, cause that will break the trust.......

The things I do for my mother........

I use suave conditioners sometimes (but NEVER their shampoos), and some of them have "milk protein" or "silk protein" as ingredients.

Some Aveda products have "quinoa protein" as an ingredient.

Our family currently uses "equate dandruff shampoo Cooling for all types of hair"

Works pretty good on dandruff but kinda leaves the head dry as a bone....

I think we should change......

Most dandruff shampoos are drying as heck.  Just get some Creme of Nature shampoo (the green label) or some Elasta QP shampoo (either Creme Conditioning or one for Relaxed Hair) and she should be alright.  It will take some time to see results based on the extent of the damage.  Also she will need some good conditioner.  A moisturizing one to boot.

I totally agree with the others. If your mom doesnt want to stop relaxing her hair try to see if she will stretch the inbetween time of touchups. Also the treatments, regular trims, and conditioning/moisturizing shampoos and deep conditioning should help. And of course LESS heat as possible otherwise the state of her hair will not change and her going thru menopause doesnt help unfortuantly with all the changes she will go through (my mom is going through it too LOL).

Funny you should mention heat, cause I caught her using her blow dryer on high again, and I said "Ahhh mom you should stop" Then she gave me the evilest look and *CRACK* she done broked the thang over me head! Yes she hit me with it and I did not feel a thing.

Now with no more hairblower we are closer to making her join the dark side......errr good side.

I can't wait till that stuff called "New Phase" kicks in......she started last week.....

*Wonders why they say menopause only affects them, but the males are the ones that get ran over by a tank and shot at*
