QuoteReplyTopic: Business and Long Hair? Posted: January 05 2003 at 9:56pm
I`m a Business Administration student. I have waist length hair. I was wondering if anyone knew of some easy professional styles to try? Cause one thing is for sure I`m not cutting my hair for a job. Most of the women in my class have cut their hair because that`s what they think they should do. There is one other woman in my class with long hair. I kinda of get the feeling sometimes the other women wanna tell me to cut my hair. But they just aren`t brave enough to say it.
Thanks, Anna

I used to have hair past my waist,(I wear it in a short pixie nowadays). If you don`t want to cut your hair, wear it up or tied back in a bun. I used to always do that at work. You can of course wear it in a ponytail too, although that is less formal. Just wearing it long and loose however, seems "girly" or immature or unbusinesslike to some of your stuffier business types. Wearing it up or in a bun seems more elegent , classy, or formal to many people.
No need to cut it though, unless you want to cut it.

Glad to hear you`re not bowing to peer pressure - obviously if they aren`t brave enough to say it, there must be some doubt in their minds.
Anyway - I have tailbone length hair - and go to the office every day. I wear regular buns, braided buns, a french twist, and on casual days, a single long braid.
I think as long as hair is neat, it is professional - it doesn`t have to be short!
I work at a Fortune 500 company where I am both the youngest and longest-haired person in my department. I recommend a bun--but not just any bun! Target sells these faux hair pieces by Scunci that wrap around a bun. The effect is a dressy updo with curls wrapping around the bun or straight pieces bursting out in all directions. Best of all it costs about $4. I routinely get more compliments on that simple hairstyle than when I spend a good part of my morning drying my hair straight and wearing it down. It`s very simple and only takes a minute. I hope this helps...good luck with whatever you decide!

I`m a journalist, and while my hair is only about to my waist, I`m the only female in the whole BUILDING with hair that long. The last holdout cut hers to mid-back a couple of weeks ago. And I`m definitely the only reporter with hair this long. I wear it in a low pony tail to work most of the time, varying that with a braid and sometimes loose. I just don`t care whether other people think it`s professional or not. Be an individual! LOL
Hi Gordo, you`re a journalist---print or broadcast? I worked for a Michigan daily as a GA reporter during college. My degree is PR, however, and I`m glad, because I just didn`t have the guts for reporting murders, diseases, heartbreak, etc. Now I`m in corporate communications, but I still have a LOT of respect for the writers who can take the daily wars waged in the newsroom. And sometimes I do catch myself missing the thrill of the chase...a little :-)

I have hip length hair and don`t plan to cut it until I`m good and ready. :) Like the others said try a bun, twist or low pony tail. Also, did you ever watch Ally McBeal when Portia de Rossi`s (Nelle) hair was down to her waist? She had a lot of great up styles. You could probably look at pictures of her from Ally and get some ideas.

Hi Anna,
Glad to read your opinion about work and long hair. I`m a lawyer and my hair is about 1 meter long (42 inches). I wear my hair in the office very often straight and down, especially when I wear trousers. With (short) skirts I prefer to wear my long hair up or in a bun. A pony tail is always OK and easy. What matters: how do you do your work? That`s is professonalism. Besides of it: I get a lot of compliments on my long hair and 2 girls in my office started to let their hair grow. I support them!

I am an Accounting Student, and my hair is almost to my natural waist. I currently do not work, I am just a full time student. I wouldn`t cut my hair if I were you. There are many ways to wear it. A bun, or a hair scruncie as someone had mentioned before are both good ideas.
Another idea is to start by french braiding your hair, but when you start the regular braid part at the base of your neck, put it into a pony tail there. The top is fancy, and you can curl the ends or leave them straight. It is a fairly quick and easy idea. I like french braids, but my edges tend to stick out as I get towards the bottom, with the pony tail at the base, I don`t have to worry about those annoying stick outs! Good luck with your classes.
