You should just have to put a red shade over what you have now if you want to keep the same level of lightness. Test strand to make sure you wind up with the shade you want before you do your whole head, that will minimize difficulty and damage of having to redo it.

Hello! I have naturally dark brown hair, that is currently colored a medium brown shade (level 6). I would like to return to the medium auburn/red shade that I previously had (similar to Debra Messing's color). I also have some former highligting peeking through as well. My question is, will it be a difficult process to return to red? I have very long hair (tailbone length) and don't want to do anything that may compromise its health.
