my hair is layered but i want super long hair ( yes its curly a little thin too) the only reason its layered is because the stylist told me it would grow like a christmas tree if i were to let it grow even, is it going to grow right in layers? what  does everyone think?

If your hair is a little on the thin side, then I don't think you are going to have too much trouble with it getting bulky (the Christmas tree analogy), in fact I think it will do good things for the overall volume.  It all depends on what kind of look you are going for.  Do you want to emphasize the curls? If so, layering might break up the curls a bit and reduce the weight.

Personally, I have very wavy hair and lots of layers, my goal is to grow the layers out. I know that if my hair were all one length, the waves would be more of a "ripple"...but that's fine by me.

Btw, how long is your hair right now?

25 inches as at 1st Nov 06

I say just grow it and see how it goes.  If you want, you can always trim it periodically to thicken up the bottom.  Since it's curly, it might not even need it.  Have you ever had it long before?  Sometimes it's hard to tell exactly what the hair will do when it's longer.

this is my hair currently when i go in for a trim i usually just keep it layered just a very tiny bit trimmed off every 6mths or so cuase im trying to grow it long down my back but i dont know how its gonna look with my type of hair and in layers.  with the christmas tree analogy i meant its going to grow pointed like the shape of a christmas tree that is what the stylist told me and said i needed to grow it in layers??

A hairdresser once told me my daughter would never be able to grow her hair long.  She had tight curls but desperately wanted long hair like her friends.  We ignored the hairdresser and let it grow.  It went through a messy year or two, but is now long, straight and one length.  It is possible.  Keeping it tied back or plaited disguised the mess!

Layers looks beautiful on long curly hair, but usually they do the layering only on the last few inches of hair or it gets bushy all around the head.  The layering near the end does keep it from looking wider at the ends, and makes the curls taper in a lovely way.  I agree with the above though, you just have to let it grow and see how it goes and what you prefer on yourself.

Having a tiny bit trimmed every 6 months is a good idea to keep splits in check (but remember only a tiny bit, average hair grows about 3 inches in 6 months, so you don't want to cut off too much or it will take forever).

Given your goal length, I would advise doing no layering while your hair is growing out.  It'll probably naturally layer as it gets longer anyway - no stylist required.   Look at my sig pic.  I have natural layering all the way to nothing.  It gradually gets thinner on its own.  Even at my waist it isn't very thick.  If your hair thickness turns out to be anything like mine, you can grow it to your goal length and just blunt trim the ends (or maybe slight layering only at the ends), but you won't need any additional layering of the length.
