For the first time in years, I have been growing my hair long again.
These days I have straight, light brown hair a few inches past my
shoulders.
As my hair has gotten longer, it tangles more easily.
Just out of curiosity, because I would like to get a few different
opinions on this, what do you long haired ladies and gentleman believe
is the best way to detangle long hair without causing any damage to
your long tresses?
I might add, what type of brush or comb do you long haired folks use
for detangling? Are there certain shampoos or conditioners you feel are
best for keeping long hair looking good and less inclined to tangle
your long hair?

Only use a comb when your hair is wet, only use a brush when your hair is dry.
Use a large tooth comb- and be sure there is no "seam" between the teeth.
Use conditioner every time you comb it.
I am hoping it's OK to tell you the hair product that I think is absolutely essential for detangling: it's Kiehls Leave In Conditioner.
To get rid of a tangle start just below the tangle so everything below the tangle gets loose. Then slowly work up into the tangle- NEVER pull.
It might seem like this would take longer- especially with long hair, starting like half an inch before the end and working your way up but believe it, it is the FASTEST way and will spare your hair damage.
Tried and true- and I have been known to take the comb from an assistant's hand at a salon if they are doing it wrong and do it myself. The stylist will always concur. Never pull. Start from the bottom.

I'm no expert, but from my experiences, I have to agree completely with that. Also, I've had stylists who were rather rough with the comb and tried to detangle at the top, ouch!
One other thing, and I don't know if this is bad or not, but it has worked for my daughter's hair on occasion when the hair is just terrible. Get in the shower, wet the hair, and put a generous amount of conditioner on the hair, and then GENTLY work up the tangles, like above.
However, it's usually best to comb the hair while it's dry before you get in the shower. But if the tangling is severe, the conditioner really softens the hair to make it easier. But it's also more vulnerable when it's wet, so you have to use a comb (never a brush, like others have said) and be very, very gentle.
Wet with conditioner- comb, yes
Dry with brush only.
Comb will break hair when it's dry - comb is rigid, hair will give- you want the brush to give so your hair doesn't break.
A good conditioner will sort of grease your hair so the comb slides through it. Like trying to grab a greased pig.
Cut off split ends, they look like poop and actually make more knots which will just end up with your hair looking ragged. Also the raggedness works it's way up the shaft.

the king of the long haired dudes, but my hair is getting long.

Hi Brent, I think beatnik guy has hair about classic length (?) but he hasn't posted here in awhile. Sunsailing posts occasionally and his hair is about waist-length...
