Any one have any protective styles they wear while growing their hair out they would like to share. The only one I really do is the pony tail to keep my ends from rubbing against my clothing...

I usually wear buns or braidouts and just finger comb my hair when I wear braidouts.   I also like to wear flexirod sets because they dont require that much manipulation when yuo take them out.

What is the best way to wear a bun? Can you describe how you do? I use to wear buns alot but found that it was causing split ends. Probably form the way I kept in place.
I did: one hair tie to hold the ponytail. then spread the hair out in a "star" shape. wrapped extra hair around hair tie and kept in place with additional hair tie.

Is there a better way?

O there are alot of things you can do...just have be creative.  I use to do fake hair cuts...roll your lower layer of hair and pin it up...let the top portion be the cut.

Buns...fake ponytails.... flatwists in the front and curls in the back (the tighter the curl the shorter the hair will look so it won't rub on your clothes)

Various french rolls/chignons

There are so many things you can do.  Wet the hair, scrunch it while it airdry...I used hair lotion with john freda relaz with it.

Ladyflash I use the sock bun method to make my buns.  What I do is take an old pair of socks and cut off the top where the toes would be.  Then I would roll both of the socks together to form a doughnut shape.  I would make the bun by taking my hair and putting it into a pontail.  Then you take the sock doughnut and place it around the ponytail where the ponytail holder or elastic band is.  Next You take the hair hanging from the ponytail and spread it over the sock doughnut and secure with another elastic band.
I hope I explained it well enough because my explanations can be kind of confusing

I wear buns, braid outs, twist outs, bantu knots/bantu sets, and ponytails.

There are a lot of styles that you can try, you just have to experiment and see what works best for you.

As for making a sock bun, this link may be helpful: http://forum.blackhairmedia.com/forum_posts.asp?TID=25954&KW=silk+socks&PN=1

Braiding helps the hair to grow so I would suggest you to try to keep your hair braided a lot.  And when you don't have it braided you could put it in rollers or plait your hair at night and take it out in the morning to have crinkly waves that won't brush against your clothes.  As for the bun--my method is to put the hair in a ponytail, then grab the ponytail and keep twisting the hair until it curls into a round donut shape.  You can then secure the tiny loose end by tucking it under the bun and putting a bobby pin in it or simply adding another pony tail holder.

Rollersets and wigs have become my best friends!  I may do cornrows and rollerset at the same time.... that may be cute.

Straw sets, regular roller sets, and a basic wrap style are great when you are growing out a cut.
