Hi all,
 
I know i should put this question on the hair colour board but reading through a few posts there are all about bleaching and stripping etc ( i ran away and fast!) two weeks ago i colored my hair with a home colouring kit herbal essencess fearless colour to be pricise in ruby red permant.
 
I do like to dye my now hair and usually use semi permants as they are more kinder and less damaging than a permant, the reason i used a permant this time is that herbal essencess advertise there permant colours to contain no ammonia the only one in the uk apprently.
 
I have been thinking about henna of and on for a few months and i have come to the conclusion that i would like to try it! The burning question is how long will i have to wait till i can henna with this colour only being two weeks old? Usually with a semi or permant they recommed a top up every 4 to 6 weeks is this the same for henna?
 
Hope fully this will be the last home colourant i ever use when i convert to henna!

I hope missrini comes back, she is really the one who knows most about henna.   One thing she always said is that its important to use body art quality henna, not stuff you buy in a box from the store that comes in different colors.  Those tend to have metals they add to it that can cause you to get a bad result (not so shiny hair, henna that comes out after a few weeks, or at the worst, permanant green hair because your hair was too porous from previous heavy lightening).  I don't think it matters how long ago you did chemical dye before you do henna, the main thing is that after you do henna, dye won't take until the henna is completely out because it coats the hair (and body art quality henna is supposed to be permanent).  That's about the extent of what I know about it, hope this was helpful.

Susan W. is right.Body art quality  henna is the way to go.And it doesnt matter how long ago you dyed.

Here I am   Hi whhoiskad....you have received good advice so far. 

Just to address your question re "topping up" your colour....you won't need to do that at all with henna.  Once your hair is  coloured with henna it is permanent and it won't fade.  The only reason to re-colour is for a deeper/richer colour, or to colour roots of a different colour (like my grey ones!!)  I haven't coloured my lengths with henna for about 6 months now, but I do my roots every 3 weeks.

I also just want to clarify that henna doesn't coat your hair, it binds with the keratin there (which has other benefits too....like added thickness, shine, etc.) Also, green hair would result from the metallic salts in compound henna mixing with a chemical dye.  Best to stick with BAQ henna.

But you will get LOADS of info from the H4H site and I'm sure you'll be a happy henna head in no time!

Thanks missrini,  have been looking around at henna supplies in the uk there doesnt seem to be much choice so probally ordering from the website seems to be the best idea at least i know what i am getting then!
 
Btw has anyone ever tried Lush henna or The Body Shop henna? These are more mainstream and avalible in the town i live in

I've tried the lush stuff. I went with one similar to my own colour. It didn't last very long but my hair was too large for the amount of gunk. The underside was very rich and dark but I can't say much happened with the rest of it. Heard good stuff about the Bodyshop henna though. I think Boots do some too.

whhoisakid.....best to stick with BAQ henna if you can.  There is a UK supplier called "henna boy" or something like that.  If you go to H4H, they have a suppliers link with them all listed.
 
Lush henna is harder to prepare and apply than the BAQ stuff and has other things added to it for the different shades, so you don't have as much control over the resulting colour.
 
It's worth the extra expense to get the "good stuff" IMO.
