Aah, very long, straight hair. Maahvelous. It stands out, it's cut less often (or not cut at all), it's a crowning glory. While theoretically, it may be a social mask, it may just as well be the person's preference. After all, that's the way hair grows naturally. So I see no need for anyone to cut their hair. And yes, the kind of buns and braids one can make with hair that long is fabulous! I encourage anyone thinking of growing their hair super-long to go for it.

I think that Uzma did an excellent job explaining her opinions. I really like that. I have been growing out my hair for a while now, and it is about 32" (from front to back) long now. I get the urge (to cut) every now and then, because I really can't curl my hair, but I Love it longer. Its so easy, I know that I don't have to spend as much time on my hair as I used to when it was shorter. (and I can throw on a ball cap and it doesn't get all bent out of shape )
As for having long hair and Hiding something, I have to disagree. Many people grow out their hair and take a tremendous amount of care of it to keep it healthy. I am not hiding anything "behind" my hair.
Many people end up not liking the layers after some time, I think the bangs or highlighting is a great idea.
Good luck with your decisions!

instead of cutting your hair you could maybe try some highlights or cutting bangs. or even try some suttle layers. see if any of those options help. if not then see about maybe cutting your hair just a little.
On the contrary Dania - If you really think about it...and this is only my opinion. It takes great confidence and pride to walk in today's society with long hair. In my opinion, those who are afraid and hide their true selves are the ones who wish they could wear their hair long, but conform to society's expectations and wear their hair short. It may be because of age, a job, wife or husband, mom or dad - or even your own idea of how you should look to be accepted. That to me is a bigger veil than any your own hair could create.
I just think that having waist length hair is too much hair for one. Anyone that has long hair gives me the impression that they are scared or embarassed about themself and are trying to hide their inner and outer beauty behind their hair. Don't get me wrong, I think some people look better with long hair and should have long hair but I don't think anyone should have hair past their midback. These people who are suited better in longer hair doesn't mean that they are shy or scared or whatever, it just means that they have found a length and style that suits them best, maybe.
Excuse me while I roll repeatedly on the floor, laughing my ass off. You really have no idea, Dania.
Well excuse me, you shouldn't even be on this site if you want to be rude. This site is for people who want to learn not for people who want to be rude to others. If I have no idea then please teach me instead of being rude. The time you spend being rude to others, they will have learnt a lot more than you. So if you want to be rude, don't post it but if you want to teach something, then you have a right to post. We are not here to start an argument or fight.

I know what you're saying, Dania, but is one hiding themself if they are wearing their hair up/back in a ponytail, braid, french twist, pollyanna, braided bun, figure 8 bun, crown braid, french braid, or dutch braid?
Maybe they just have long hair because they like it and/or what they can do with it?
If I may ask, if you are "for" short hair then why are you in this area of the boards? We are here to support, just like the title says.
I never did think about people who have their long hair up/back in a ponytail, braid, french twist, pollyanna, braided bun, figure 8 bun, crown braid, french braid, or dutch braid? The thing that I wonder is how people can spend so much time in maintaining their hair when there is a lot to do during the day. Anyhow, I never said you can't have long hair. I just said that, in my opinion, midback length hair should be the longest anyone should have their hair. That doesn't stop you from having longer hair though. What am I going to do? Come over to your house and chop your hair off to punish you for not listening to me? Definitely not! Everyone is a person of their own and they should and will do what they want to themselves. I am not for short hair and neither am I for long hair either. I am just here trying to help people realize what they want to do as well as expressing my view. I certainly don't think mid back length hair is short, it is still pretty long.

Also, in my opinion, waist length hair is a bit too long.
Too long for what?!

Should I cut my hair? my hair is long(waist line) I was think about cutting my hair to mid back and adding layers to it. My hair is brown and straight so I have hair that is now stringy. I want to cut it, but people tell me not to. What should I do?
Hallie,
If you want to cut it, go ahead. Don't let others make desicions for you. BUT, I think you should wait a few weeks before doing so, it will give you time to think. The people who get their long hair cut right away usually regret it (I did).
A psychological approach........... I would advise you to do the following things:
(1) Wait for a month> don't make any sudden decisions. Allow yourself this important deciding time. It's only going to grow another 1cm in that time. Don't skip any of the following steps. Each one is critical. Also: Do NOT ask anyone's opinion. They are not in possession of your hair - You are.
(2) Week 1 > go into some local hair salons and watch hair being cut into various styles. Tell the salon staff that you are just checking their cutting expertise out (or whatever works). Watch long hair being cut, if you can, and see how you feel. Are you feeling good/bad/sad/excited? Note your reactions.
(3) Week 2 > go to anywhere where you will be able to see long-haired people. This could be your shopping mall, a biker's hang-out, a long-hair salon, the various long-hair sites on the internet. Look at the long hair, the way it moves, the way it sits on the body/clothes/etc. How do you feel? Are you inspired/repelled/envious/disgusted? Note your reactions.
(4) Week 3 > Don't think about hair. Ignore it on yourself and on others. Put it to the back of your mind. There are other more important things in life. Eat chocolate. Have a massage. Whatever.
(5) Week 4 > Go buy some cheap hair-toys (clips, grips, bands, claws, etc). Don't spend more than 10 bucks. Sit in front of the mirror for 2 hours/an afternoon/as long as it takes. Firstly, just close your eyes and think about all the short/medium/long hair you saw during weeks 1 & 2. Relax. Run your fingers through your hair. Start playing with it and experiencing it - not with judgement or criticism, just as another part of your body. Now have some fun with the hair-toys. Try some conventional styles. Try some really stupid styles. Have a laugh. Brush your hair and section it. You may need a friend at this point. Fold each section of hair back upon itself so that it is half it's current length and use a u-grip to pin it onto itself. Do this for the whole of your head. Thank your friend and send them home. Now look at yourself. Remember the volume of hair that you see is double what it would be if you cut it. Look in a full length mirror. Swing that hair! Does it suit you? Do you feel comfortable. How do you feel? Do you REALLY want this?
Now, before you go to sleep that night, ask yourself “What do I truly wish for my hair?” Make a pact with yourself that you will know by the morning, even if you thing you know right then. Sleep on it. By the next morning, and after all this time, you should be as sure as you are going to be.
Next day: DO IT!
Best of luck.

Do as you please, and to counter the previous poster's point, there is no terminal length as long as you care and love what you have. Although floor hair should be taken care of, cutting is not the only option.
I hate all of the following and lots more : Fundamentalists, racists, sexists, fascists, ageists (people saying seniors = senile , kids = stupid , 18 = immature or a combo of them), and bigots for causes yet to receive their own designation.
hallie, I think it is pretty clear what you should do. You want to cut your hair so you should go ahead and cut your hair. Just do what you want to do. Don't let other people control your life or what you do to your hair. Its your hair and you should be the only one to decide what you want to do to your hair. Also, in my opinion, waist length hair is a bit too long. I think the longest someone should have their hair is midback.
