Yes! That is a good question. I think they have to put that little paper in that holds the solution to your hair. But I don't know if perms have evolved since the last time I had one. When I had mine longer, I would just put it in 4 or 5 braids before bed witha bit of setting gel in there and it would look great the next day.
p.s. I do know for a fact that a spiral will not work unless you have layers cut in to take some of the weight off and give the perm shape.
Hope a stylist comes on to answer this one.

I know some women with long hair who have had spiral perms and it worked for them, although when I had long hair my hair didn't take well to being curled.
Interesting the idea you have with braids and perm. I wonder if one of our hair expert/beauticians on this board would know about that?
hi all, my hair is a love hate thing for me, one day it looks ok at shoulder length(currently to bottom of shoulderblades but not completely even)
I like some curl to it but do not have time to sit and fuss with it. I want more than a wave but not completely spiraled besides most say that long hair cant be spiraled. here is a question, could one have thier hair braided (in whatever type they wanted) and then the perm be put on instead of using those horrible rods? anyone got any ideas on this? i love how hair looks when it is taken down from a braid... thanks lady kava
