Okay, so I decided I'm not going to go lighter because I don't want to deal with all the bleaching and all that. But I do want a change, and it's kinda hard to make much of a change when you're already med/dark brown and don't really want to go darker. So I was thinking I would change the tone of my hair. My hair is naturally medium brown with a red sheen to it in the sunlight. It's actually a very pretty color, but I feel that the red washes me out too much (I'm VERY fair skinned), so I tried to find a brown dye that was just *brown* - no red or gold. I finally got that with L'oreal Excellence, but now I'm thinking that pure brown washes me out also. I know I could go to the salon and get highlights, which I'm sure I'd like, but I don't want to have to go the salon and spend all the money and stuff.
So basically, I'm wondering whether you all think gold or chestnut tones would look good with my coloring? As I said, I'm not a huge fan of red on me, so really that just leaves gold or more "cool" browns.
Here's a picture of me with my natural hair color, in natural sunlight (standing next to an open window). You can really see the red in my hair: http://img.makeupalley.com/2/3/9/7/445256.jpeg
Here's one of me with just regular indoor lighting and my natural pale skin: http://img.makeupalley.com/2/3/9/7/452251.jpeg
And here's one of my hair now (dyed "Dark Brown" with L'Oreal Excellence), and with a sunless tan: http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y52/shortcake_83/tan-1.jpg
Judging from my coloring, should I go with gold tones? Or should I try a "cool" brown? I think I'd kinda like to try the golden color, I'm just afraid of brassiness...
I'd be inclined to say you look great both with red and with cool
tones, I wouldn't say you look washed out. I'm not sure you'd
look good with gold since your skin looks very pink in the first photo
(gold / yellow can make pink people look very red), but then gold would
probably look fine with your tan in the last photo, there you don't
look pink at all. I think both cool tones and reds work great on
you. Good luck with your choice!

Thanks for your reply! I went to Sally's to look at their Ion Brilliance over the weekend and asked the girl working there some questions. I told her what I was looking for in terms of end result, and she recommended Light Copper Brown to me. The color swatch looked very pretty, and she said their colors are very accurate. She said to go with the Light because my hair already had color in it, and that if I choose a medium or dark, it could turn out VERY dark, like black.
I just hope the "copper" part doesn't turn out orange. lol It's one of the "Richest Reds" so it's a red/chestnut color basically. Hopefully that'll work for me! I'm a little nervous to use it... I usually use the kits you get in the box, but I have used the separate stuff from Sally's, too. Let's see if I can remember! haha I won't be dying my hair for probably another two weeks or so.
