Ive grown my hair past shoulder length without protective styles.  In my experiences with protective styling Ive found that they make my ends feel dry and crispy.  Whenever I would wear my hair in a bun or french twist my ends would feel like straw no matter how much I moisturized.

Protective styles work great for me.
I wear protective styles 90% of the time, they're great for retaining length.
Late last year I reached my first hair goal of BSL, protective styles definitely helped with that.
I dont think I'll ever stop wearing protective styles, my hair does well with them.

When I wear my hair in buns I feel like it kills my ends. The only "protective style" I wear is a ponytail to keep it off my cotton shirts!

I thought I was the only who felt this way. When I wear my bun, even with moisturizing, my ends feel dry and shed like crazy. I just gave up on my protective styles and my hair is doing fine now.

Yes, majority of the time unless I'm having a bad hair day I'll put it up. Otherwise, i just unwrap and go.

Protective styles are great for retaining length.
I went from shoulder length to brastrap length using protective styles.
I wasn't really feelin' the whole bun thing...so what I did was pulled my hair back into a high or low ponytail, and tucked my ends under. That worked for me...and I saw length.

Protective styles are very effective for ME. Even when I wear braids, twists and other stretched styles I keep them piinned up or something to keep them off of my clothes. Now my hair stretched is midback and may be longer, not sure. Protective styles are excellent and time saving styles for me.

you can grow your hair out with protective styles by trying to protect the ends of your hair. make sure your regiment is consistant in retaining length

I love protective styles, I contribute it to being able to get past APL. I don't wear a regular bun anymore...I now baggy under a phony pony and I like this much better because it keeps the ends moist while still protecting

My protective styles are mostly braids/cornrows, wigs and weaves. Buns do make your ends dry and frizzy if you don't tuck it under neatly and smoothly. I can't see myself not ever wearing protective styles. It helps to keep manipulation to a minimum and I def. retain more length when I wear them.
