If you have ever had short hair and now it is long, how long did it take you to grow it out and what routine did you use. I really would like to grow my hair back out from its now 2 1/2 inch state to 6 inches. I went natural and it did not work for me and my busy schedule so I got it relaxed back. I am anxious about growing it back out to the length it was before I did the big chop. Tell me what you went through and what you recommend.Smile

Well this is for me....my hair is growning very rapidly because I don't wash it as much because it takes the oil and instuff away which skartches your hair....and it's vise versa with white people they need to wash their hair often because their hair produces alot of moisture instuff.....I keep my hair grease with Doo Gro Stimulation Growth oil and I spray my hair with Sta-Sof- Fro hair and scalp spray......everyday and it's working...im natural....
but that's just my humble opiniom

i'm gonna beg to differ on this one. I have done daily conditioner washes for the last 3.5 years and my growth has not suffered nor has my hair. It is an individual choice as to whether you wash frequently or not. Just keep in mind that dry hair breaks. I can't really answer your question because i trim frequently so i haven't reached the longest length that i had as a permie yet. But my hair is much thicker and is at the same length it was when i bc'ed. I do the baggie method as well and have had success with it.Moisturizing, pre-pooing, using henna treatments weekly and deep conditioning for 45-60 mins weekly have all helped my hair.

My hair was less than 2 inches last year.  Now it is a few inches passed my shoulders.  Even though that is not exactly long, I have come a long way in a little over a year's time.

I went natural and started braiding it every few weeks.  Then after a few months, I got tired of the braids, and started to wear it in cornrows, underneath a plastic cap, and underneath a wig. After 12 months of being natural, I relaxed.  I have been relaxed for 9 months now.

I too am very anxious of growing it out and my next goal is APL. This is what I did to get it to grow from 2 inches to my current length:

1) stretch my relaxers to 12 weeks to prevent overprocessing and overlapping of chemicals on previously-relaxed hair;

2) deep condition every week, consistently;

3) co-wash every 3-4 days, in between deep-conditioning treatments;

4) moisturize my ends twice daily;

5) comb only on wash days, and use wide-tooth combs, starting first from ends to roots gently;

6) protective styling...tucking ends away to prevent ends from snapping on clothes;

7) sleep with silk on head to prevent rubbing on cotton and eventual breakage;

8) recently started to rollerset, to straighten out my bushy roots and new growth (I decided that I will be rollersetting towards the later weeks of my stretches);

9) pre-shampoo treatments, such as: olive oil, warm conditioner, coconut oil, coconut milk; on dry hair for an hour or more, and sometimes overnight

10) avoiding direct heat, such as hot irons, and blow dryers, and instead using Caruso Steam rollers and hooded dryers as safer heat alternatives.

This is what I am doing currently and it has gotten me results.  I am constantly tweaking my regimen as I learn more about my hair.

The trick is to keep your hair hydrated.

Also, learn to pay attention to your moisture and protein balance.  If hair is too hard and dry, then add more moisture.  If your hair is too limp or mushy, then add more protein.

Sistaslick has written a couple of informative articles on hair care, and has posted it on some of the other boards, so it may be worth it to read it.  PM me and I will email it you.

There are books out there, such as Carolyn Gray's, that has helped me develop a consistent and reliable regimen, and it is a great resource to reference back to.

Good luck.

Well for me, after I cut my hair in a short style (which was very dumb of me) I just took extra care of my hair in order for it to grow back (as it is now) it took about a year and a half I think.

I kept my hair moisturized, braids at first because I couldnt catch the back..after the braids I went back to my good old sew-in weaves < which I gained the majority of my growth as well as gave my hair a rest. I did not relax often..which I still dont, I kept my hair well conditioned, treatments (protein, deep, hot oil), cleaned and the use of less heat as well. I also did the baggie treatment on my ends.

The products I used ranged in a variety due to me being a PJ. I LOVE Kemy Oyl product line. ORS Olive Oil Moisturizing Lotion, Sulfur 8 light, Infusium 23 leave in, CON detangeling shampoo, My own mixture of natural oils like lavendar, almond, aloe, advocado, pepperment, grapeseed, etc.
WOW more than that but products are trial and error though. But that's the basics on how my hair grown.

Its taken my hair a year to grow back to where it was last Dec., actually it still isn't as long in the front as it was, but the back is longer.  I cut my hair 3 times throughout the year though.
Current Hair Length: Ear
Hair Goal Length: Chin/Neck (Mar. 2007)
Ultimate Desired Length: APL, BSL (May 2008)
