So, what is it about long hair that you like it so?

For me there are many reasons, but I'd like to hear your thoughts first...

Thanks!

Why I like long hair:

1. No matter what miracles science comes up with for reducing wrinkles and making other stuff better, they will never come up with something that will make me 2 inches taller.

My hair on the other hand, continues to grow.

2. It's neat to look down and down the length realizing that it all starts from my head. There's no tributary streams coming from anywhere else (lol)! If one were to take a tape measure and measure from the crown of my head to my ends and compare it to the measure of my arms (from shoulders to fingertips) and legs (inside), it's longer. I have successfully attained a 5th appendage. :)

3. I know that everywhere I go, people are startled with the length; 99% of the time, I've got at least 6 inches to a foot more. Since it's gotten to classic length, people have become a bit more outspoken.

4. The longer it gets the more fun I'm having with trying to disguise the length, and I'm getting alot more creative with putting it up.

5. It's been past my shoulders for 14 years, past my waist for 9 of those. It just feels right.

My hair is almost to my knees (~50") and continues to grow longer. Rather slowly these days, but that's ok - it's still *growing*.

What follows are my personal thoughts.
These words are not presented as true for anyone else, nor are they here to judge anyone else’s choice about their hair. Warning: I may get pretty obscure at times.

So, here are the roots (no pun intended) of the matter:

Long hair growth on the scalp is unique to human’s in the animal kingdom.
I have had conversations with both medical and social scientists in order to determine the reason why humans are exclusive in this respect, and what purpose is served by this growth.
Their conclusions centre on (a) insulation &/or (b) tribal/gender differentiation through styling.
Those explanations are acceptable but not the whole story as far as I am concerned.

I have studied philosophy and religion for most of my life ~ it’s my “thing”.
As well as “mainstream organised” religions, I have investigated native and pagan belief systems, mythology and shamanistic practices in many cultures.
There is a lot of hair ritual involved in spirituality, which pointed back to the social scientist’s differentiation and rites of passage explanations.

With a few notable exceptions (e.g.Buddhism) the hair is considered to be an embodiment of primal, ethereal essence and a cipher for, and connection with the Cosmic Reality (call it whatever you will).
I won’t elaborate on this as I would bore you all to tears.

OK – I was still not satisfied. I had real problems with this theory and yet it “got” to me.

In my own life, hair had been a way of others controlling my development, freedom, etc.
I read about the subjugation of Native American tribes and the slave trade and how hair and it’s destruction was a way of asserting power and control over these people.

This was an illogical act on the purely scientific basis (hair is dead, the insulation it offers is only life-preserving if we are naked and it is full grown) but valid on the social basis (systematic genocide and obliteration of identity).

Through a series of events (again, I won’t bore you) the spiritual angle and outcome became known to me.
It revealed the connectedness and purpose of every aspect of our being and the part that hair played in it. I finally started understanding the meaning and impact for the oppressed people to have their hair shorn – a spiritual brutalisation of people whose life essence was utterly rooted in the Spirit.

So long hair for me has a deeply symbolic and spiritual significance.

I am trying to manifest it for myself and, hopefully, will experience some of that ethereal essence and connection as I travel this road......

.....Oh, and it looks beautiful, too (LOL).

Hi GrowingItOut -- welcome to the HairBoutique's Long Hair Support board. How long is your hair now? Have you thought about how long you might like to let it grow? I started growing my hair about 11 years ago.

I'll respond yet to answer my own question yet... just not today.

Great responses, Nicole Zoie and Uzma...!

HAIR GROWING AND CUTTING HAS OFTEN BEEN REGARDED AS VERY SPIRITUAL!!!
NOT JUST A FASHION STATEMENT.
. Growing hair was spiritual in many Native American Indian tribes. The cutting of hair was also considered a spiritual exercise with many tribes.
In Buddhism and in many African religions, the shaving of men or women's heads was considered a spiritual act.
With the Sikhs men were expected to grow their hair to their ankles.
Other cultures required women to cover their heads and hair.
In the early Christian days, in some sects of Christianity men and women were expected to grow long hair. In still others, men and women were expected to have clean shaven heads.

The growing of hair and the cutting of hair and shaving of heads all had spiritual significance in different cultures at different times.
Hair has been used throughout history as a spiritual and cultural as well as a fashion statement.

Hi Julie

Yes, indeed.
Many religions, cultures, peoples have connected hair to spiritual essence.

How about you?
What do you desire for your hair? Is it long/short?

Are you pursuing any specific goals?

What do you think? Is the spiritual connection valid for you? I'd be interested to know.

Thanks.

I have always loved long hair, ever since I can remember.

My hair is one of the softest things I know of. It is also shiny and smooth. Long hair is an indicator of good health, as well as determination in the face of popular trends that promote continuous change and cuts. I like being different. Long hair is also earthy, not chemical. Long hair is timeless, enduring. It's also sensuous, and can even be sensual. Long hair tickles even as it glides, and it comforts and provides warmth. Long hair is beautiful to see, and beautiful to touch. Long hair flows, blows and caresses. Long hair is almost alive, as it moves and undulates, following the shape of the person wearing it. Long hair is magic!

Long hair takes time, patience, and a commitment. It shows how much a person is willing to stick out in a crowd and share their own beauty with the world.

-Hannah
Flatter me, and I may not believe you.
Criticize me, and I may not like you.
Ignore me, and I may not forgive you.
Encourage me, and I will not forget you.
Love me, and I may be forced to love you.

Hannah! So good to see you here. Everybody, Hannah has amazingly thick (and beautiful!) hair. Growing quickly too! She's been blessed.

Jennifer Eve! So good to see you here too. Everybody, "Lady Godiva" has hair that's longer and more healthy than mine. Yep, believe it, it's true.

Julie is correct in that various cultures and societies have expressed a wide variety of attitudes towards hair. That in itself is a fascinating topic.

Well I'll finally share a few as yet-unexpressed thoughts (some extending from responses already provided)... why I like long hair...

Our hair is genetically programmed to be able to grow to (what some might consider) extreme lengths... for some people, to their feet and even beyond... people were not designed by their creator (theological being or evolution, whichever you believe) by "mistake." There is a reason for everything. Since it isn't a functional "appendage," such as arms, hands, legs... and since the hair on the head is different from other body hair... it must serve a unique purpose. I believe that purpose is primarily adornment, to capture the attention of others. Specifically, members of the opposite gender.

So, what type of hair most readily attracts the attention of those of the opposite gender? Hair that is significant. Meaning, lots of it. What is more noticeable? A 10-foot tall tree? Or a 100-foot tall tree? Tall trees -- and long hair -- are grand, majestic, and awesome.

There you have it. In a nutshell. And it's just my opinion, but I like it.

I like long hair mostly because it sets me apart. I don't know many people with long, curly hair. It's also soft, feminine (on me when compared to short hair), beautiful.

Long hair is almost like a flowy, mysterious cape that you wear all the time.

Long haired people are also by definition patient people. And almost everyone is drawn to a person with patience. I think patient people are wiser than most.
And to have long, healthy hair, you must be gentle with it, so you are probably gentle with fellow mankind as well.

I feel I should clarify my response. I wasn't terribly coherent the other night (due to fatigue!) when I composed it. Not that this response will be "perfect" (whatever "perfect" means) but hopefully it'll make a bit more sense.

In part, long hair is awesome because... there's a lot of it. There more there is, the more awesome it is. The tree example I gave... a 10 foot tall tree, a sapling... isn't impressive because it has not (yet, anyway) survived the most withering environmental conditions. But a 100-foot tall tree HAS survived and HAS endured and HAS grown to impressive heights. It has overcome all obstacles to its growth... heat, cold, droughts, floods... other trees. In a word, it has achieved. Similarly for people who have managed to grow their hair long despite the obstacles... the growing pains... the time required to care sufficiently for the healthy condition of the hair... people who criticize... employers who would withhold employment opportunity... the makers of products and "services," that do disservice to long healthy hair, who would convince us to purchase them... It is not easy to grow long healthy hair. And those who have, have achieved. And that is commendable. And impressive.

I like my long hair simply becasue I think it looks nice. I figure that If I can grow it and I like it it stays.
Nothing too exotic or existential. I also think that it is sexy and so does my husband.
