Pintail Comb & Curling

She said she used a pintail comb on small sections of hair and then put the flat iron over it and this made really small curls and with her hair being so short, after she backcombed the curls became bigger and turned into an afro.

It's not the afro I'm looking for but the small curls, someone told me just to get a tight perm but I don't really want to damage my hair and I only want the curls once in a while for a change. My hair is fairly long and straight though so I'm wondering if how she did it would work on me (I'm guessing this is going to take alot of patience on my hair too)

I've lost contact with her so I can't ask her any advice could anyone give me any advice and tips?

And if the pintail comb will work on me it'd help ALOT if someone could take me through how to do it seeing as I'm no hair expert :P
