QuoteReplyTopic: 1st Install ~ Micro-links + pre-tipped human hair Posted: December 09 2006 at 12:47am
Okay ladies, first of all I am a newbie here and to the extension world.
I just bought a how to DVD and have studied these posts on here for beginners help...Looks pretty simple.
I ordered 200 20" Fusion Remy Human Hair Extensions online.
I want to do a full install on a friend, or have my hubby do a full install on me. Probably myself 1st, hubby is easily taught!
I also ordered fusion heat wand and micro-links to use if needed (actually plan on using the micro-links)
Should I use the micro-links with the pre-tipped hair and how long do you think these will last with no fusion involved?
Any BAD experiences with this sort of install (micro-links + pre-tipped hair)
Any photos of this strand by strand method you can share here on this post?
PLEASE help this newbie...also I see a LOT of wefts on here, what are your thoughts on wefts and I am looking for a method that looks real, easy to maintain and also can wear for 2+ months (undetectable)
H-E-L-P...you ladies will know the answers. SO much talent on here : )
Can't wait to get some extensions and LEARN the ropes to install.
Thanks!!!

Microlinks are pretty easy to install, and with help it should be a breeze! Once you get in the groove it goes pretty fast. Just make sure to get enough natural hair in the ring so that there is enough ahir to support the strand and to keep the ring from slipping. To little natural hair in the ring will cause slipping. Also be sure that ring is crimped TIGHT.
I really recommend the silicone lined rings because the lining inside the ring helps to cushion/protect the natural hair from the metal ring. Some people experience damage from the metal ring, while others seem completely happy with the regular unlined rings.
If done right, and the hair is of decent quality, they should easily last 2-3 months. Be prepared for a several hour install the first few times. Once you get familiar with an individual install and especially with help you should be able to get it down to a few hours. But the first time could seem like a hella long time!
Weft installs are easy and quick for a DIYer, and thats why alot of DIYers opt for weft methods. Also some of us with fine or thinner hair tend to agree that we can get more volume and install more hair with weft method.
Mostly I think its just personal preference and what works for each person
hi Xtendz! i remember when i first found this board and all this information, i was like 'why has this been hidden from me for so long?!!'...
microlinks was what i chose as my first extended wear hair (after using clipins 3years)....they ended up not being for me, i just couldnt sleep well with them and i did end up preferring wefts...i would never be able to get enough individual strands on my head to add the length i've got now with wefts (not to mention it did take a LONG time to do the microring install on myself, but when you are determined you can do ANYTHING!)
there are MANY people who love microring installs though...here are some tips for you (resulting from my own errors during my microring experience)
dont put them TOO close to your scalp, i did and they hurt and pulled
strategic placement is key to keeping them undetectable...and there is no way to ensure that but with trial and error, but definately leave at least a 1'' perimeter of hair all around to disguise the links
when they say to use a looper brush, they really mean it! i ripped a lot of my hair off by using the wrong brush for a few days
hmm, did you order I-tip/shoelace tip hair, or nail tip fusion hair? for microrings, you are gonna need the shoelace tip....or else you can heat up the nail tips and re-roll them into shoelace tips to fit in the microring
good luck, i'll try to post my old microring install pics in your before /after thread

I have done this twice on myself (with a little help) I think most importantlt DO NOT condition your hair before you put in the tips, otherwise they are totally gonna slide! This is a picture of pre-tipped with silicone micro-links in 4.00mm...
(The hair actually looks wayyyyyyyyyyy better now than in the bottom picture, I'll post pictues of that soon!) I think that if you're doing yourself you shouldn't "fold" them in half when you flatten them out, and make sure you have a tool with an opener! DONT get too close to your scalp(don't let them sit right on there), and dont let the tip of the hair come out over the ring (this hurts VERY bad! found out the hard way!) Good luck!
ONE MORE THING: I just noticed you said a full head and 200 stands, I hope thats enough! I usually put 300 min. in (thats with re-tipping to make them weigh more) Just make sure it's at least 7oz if she has a normal sized head and you're making the hair longer and not JUST thicker (if you're just making it thicker you'll be okay )
