    Posted: February 22 2007 at 11:51am
Hey everyone,
I recently started using Redken products after they were suggested to me. My hair was fried from all the permanent dyeing and blowdrying. Because I was using silicone shampoos I didn't realize how bad my hair was till the shampoos I was using stopped working, and I got like a million split ends and breakage all over. It was a nightmare since I couldn't brush through it and my hair basically naturally started to form into dreadlocks. I was about ready to cry since I have been growing it out for about 6 years, and it got down to half my back, but than  I was forced to cut off about 4 inches Cry. And now my hair just won't grow very much anymore. Last time I cut it was like maybe 4 months ago and it seems that it hasn't grown more than an inch, if that.

Back to my original point, I didn't want to get it all cut off due to damage so I asked for advice and was told to use Redken Extreme Deep Fuel Treatment, which I bought along with the Extreme shampoo/conditioner.
The stuff really helped my hair a lot, and I'm still using the Extreme shampoo/conditioner since I tend to use hair products very sparingly, but after I'm done with Extreme I want to try another line.
So now I'm wondering which product to try next. I was advised before by a few people to try the All Soft shampoo/conditioner (in the orange bottle) since it's designed for dry/brittle hair (which is what I'm dealing with).
But when I go to the Redken site and complete that little survey or whatever, their website suggests all these bogus products that I really don't want/need.
For insance, my hair still gets occasional split ends and breakage since it's not very healthy (and it won't be till it grows out... I'm trying to get it back to its natural color), but the website suggests the Smooth Down and Clear Moisture lines.
I don't think Smooth Down would do any good to my hair since it's supposed to help with frizz, and I'm not concerned with frizz right now.
Clear Moisture sounds better, but I don't use a lot of styling product in my hair in the first place, and I already have a separate clarifying shampoo, so I don't see the point of getting that one.

All Soft seems like it would work much better at improving the condition of my hair. All I'm concerned with now is getting my hair as healthy and soft as possible so it doesn't break off anymore.
I basically don't like the suggestions, but it would be better to get a second opinion from someone who knows more about this.

Since my hair gets really dry easily and it's relatively brittle, should I just go for the All Soft line since it's supposed to help dry/brittle hair?
I want to make sure I get the right products since they're VERY expensive and I don't want to waste $50 on something that won't work properly.

Don't buy anything you don't think would be beneficial.  They'll tell you that you need several products because they want your money.  Take care of your immediate concerns first.  This sounds like what you're trying to do.  If your hair is very dry, get a product that will help with that.  If you have other concerns later, worry about them later.  You may find that you don't need alot of extra conditioning after the Extreme Treatment.  By then, your hair will be in much better condition.  Wait till you're getting close to needing a new bottle, then check the condition of your hair to see what it needs.  I've never used Redken, so I can't make suggestions on which type to use.  I've heard good and bad about it.  (I stick to the inexpensive brands)  Are you wanting to stick with Redken, or are you open to alternatives?

So far I've only used about half a bottle of the Extreme, and my hair feels so much better. It looks good a couple of days after I wash it, but after that it tends to dry out very quickly. I have relatively long hair so I don't like washing it very often. I only wash it every four days. By the fourth day the ends get so dry (even though I use a separate leave-in conditioner when I feel that I need it).

I'll definitely take your advice and wait till I'm almost done with Extreme and than figure out which one I need after that. I definitely won't go with their suggestion as it really isn't want I'm looking for. I'm not concerned with frizz and smoothness at all since my hair is straight and relatively frizz free on its own (except in extreme humidity in the summer). So the Smooth Down suggestion is definitely out.

I want my hair to be healthy and soft. Regaining back the health is going to take a while since I have to keep trimming it and will continue to do so until it grows back out to my natural color.

All Soft seems like it would be ideal because of the ingredients which I've always had good results from (avocado oil does wonders on my hair). I've noticed that the roots of my hair are thicker than the ends of my hair, which means that the permanent dyes definitely damaged it a lot and made it so much more prone to breakage and split ends. I'm never dyeing it again (don't know what I ever did in the first place).

As far as products go, I am going to stick with Redken for now since it seems to work really well for my hair. Later on I will probably be open to cheaper alternatives, but now I can't take that chance since I've tried just about every shampoo out there and it didn't work.
I've tried organic shampoos, Pantene, Tressemme, Suave, Herbal Essences, Garnier Fructis, Aussie, Thermasilk, Sunsilk, Dove, Nexxus, Matrix (and probably others that I can't remember). None worked very well for me now that my hair is in such a vulnerable conditioner. Redken has made it the softest and healthies so far.
Thanks for your input!

You're on the right track about not washing too often.  But since it feels really dry after a few days, you might try CO washing in between shampoo days.  My hair needs lots of extra moisture so most of the time I shampoo twice a week, and alternately CO twice a week.

I'm glad you found a product that works great for you!  Smile

I bought The Smooth Down and All Soft - both shampoo and conditioner- and like you thought that the smooth down was only for frizz I think it actually works better than the All Soft.

Hm, that's interesting.  I think before buying it I'll try and find samples or something. I think they sell those at Trade Secret, so hopefully I'll be able to try it out before buying them.
