I see these classifications on peoples signature as well as on the LHS boards. It is meant to describe the type of hair you have as well as the length? Can someone please tell me what each number (or letter sometimes) means? Sometimes I see 3 different numbers, sometimes there are ii's or c's.
Thanks Lyris - you are the queen of all that is referenced!! You know so much!! I am like that too......do you often get called Ms. know it all by family members? I get that - esp by my sister.
thanks for the link.
Amanda - thanks for the link. If you don't mind my asking, how long did it take for you to get from 18" to 26.5?

A little over 1 1/2 years. If you go to my webpage, which is in my profile, then scroll to the bottom, you will see a picture of my hair after a perm, it's held back in a headband, I'm wearing a red shirt....it was shortly after that picture was taken that I decided to grow my hair long (I think I was at 18") So, I have only had 4 trims from 7/01-4/03. I think I'm growing at a good pace, although I've only been getting about .25" a month since I've started measuring. Thanks for asking
Only 4 cuts since then? Wow! That's really good self control as well as hair care. I have gone only 2x in the year since I decided to start growing. I started growing mine from a really short cut in may of last year. i am hoping it will be 1 1/2 years for me too....but I guess it is no big deal how long it takes since once I get there I will be there for a long time!! I loved looking at all of your hair evolutions. Great page and you have come a long way! I used to perm and color my hair too. it is really great to finally just leave it alone and enjoy it (well, except for a little color every once in awhile!)
Thanks for sharing you website.
Lyris - too funny about the math. So no "calc" questions for you!! (not to brag, but I did get A's!)
oh wow.. this is defnitely a good way to keep track of hair length. Altho I'm wondering what to do about my layered locks. I suppose it's overall length that's worth keeping track of....

Hi papillon_purple,
I suppose the measurements would be for the longest strands, yes. You could always qualify the lengths you measure with "layered" (and perhaps add how much so). I would guess that it isn't a detail that most here have considered.
Are your initial and current lengths measured from the top of your forehead (for "front") and from the crown of your head (for "back")?
I believe all of the lengths others post refer only to the "back" measure, starting from the forehead line and going back over the crown of the head, and down to the ends (loosely referred to as "the GM method"). So, shoulder-length hair would be in the general vicinity of 17 inches.
You are of course free to measure as you wish, but if you're using a method different from the "GM" way, you may want to state the method you use to help avoid confusing others. Simply a suggestion, take it or leave it.
Thanks so much Dave! I've been measuring from the roots of my hair to the tips.. once in front, once in back.. the method you've described makes so much more sense!! It's about the total length of hair.. not individual strands. I guess I've just been really paranoid about how long my hair is...

Hi Pappilon_purple,
While the "GM" (George Michael) method distorts the actual length of the longest strands, I believe it is used for two purposes:
1) as a constant reference point for one's own measurement, so that growth progress can be consistently measured as time passes.
2) as a consistent method of comparison between people (not necessarily that there exists any competition with or between anybody else).
