Go to a "REAL" barbershop; preferably one near a military base.  I have found that the chain hair salons (Fantastic Sam's, ProCuts, Great Clips and Sport Clips) don't do a very good job at tapering.  They attempt to taper by reducing the guide as they cut lower on the neck but they never seem to acheive the gradual transition from zero to whatever length at the crown.
