QuoteReplyTopic: I'm finally blonde....questions about toners etc. Posted: March 17 2007 at 9:43pm
I left my camera at work, so I'll try to post pics Monday. I've been gradually adding more and more highlights to my medium brown/reddish brown hair and going with a slightly lighter, cooler base. I was having a very hard time with stylists not understanding that with my cool/pink skin tone, warm colors actually wash me out.
A friend that I work with is a natural brunette who has been blonde now for many years, and she recommended her stylist. I had an appt with her today and the first thing she did was look at my skin and hair tone in the mirror. We talked about what I was looking for but she basically said "Yes, the current color doesn't work for your skintone...it makes you look like you just got out of the hospital" I was so relieved to have someone agree with me on this....I said "YES! Thank you!" I'm sure she wasn't expecting that reaction...but I finally felt like I was communicating with someone who understood that honey/gold doesn't work for everyone...
Because my hair is already highlighted, she recommended very thick highlights and to bring it up even lighter overall. Somewhere along the lines, my layered bob has turned into a choppy mess, with layers too far apart and too short up top....she made some recommendations on styles that would work for me after she cleaned it up a bit and while I'm trying to grow my hair out to a shoulder length with long layers. She also recommended that one color along the bottom layer in the back would help make the back look better than highlights, and it really does make a difference. I wish I could post pics now, but I promise I'll post on Monday. Oh, and hubby loves it!
There's my long story. I'm looking for suggestions for cool blonde toners and shampoo/conditioners to use to keep the yellow/gold/orange at bay....what do you recommend? How often is it safe to use toners? How long do you typically leave in shampoos/conditioners?
Thanks!

I would try using the clairol shimmer lights shampoo and conditioner before you start putting toners on your hair.It has a non-damaging (temporary) violet toner in it to counteract brassiness. If you don't have much warm/gold tones in your hair, the shimmer lights may be all you need.Putting more dyes on your hair can be quite damaging especially if you've already processed it to a lighter shade, and if you decide to use a toner, definately talk to a professional first!! Hope this helps, I look forward to seeing pics of your new hair color!! :-)
I'd get ArtTec color shampoo.U can read up on it online & order to.It's a deposting shampoo.Meaning that it contains semi-permanent haircolor pigments that deposit color in the cuticle fiber.Which means u can use it on colored or bleached hair. They recommend to use it right after u color.I'd ask a hair dresser what color u should try.Don't worry, when u stop using it.The color will go back to what u had, so if u don't like it.It's not permanent. All it does it adds alittle color & shine. To help keep your color from fading.I use the cond.I have blonde hightlights & I use Lemon Sunflower color. It keeps my color bright.Today, my husband's Nana asked me if I colored my hair again.I was like no.She said, wow. It looks blonder. All it is , is ArtTec color cond.I have tried toners.I think they suck.Cuz I didn't really see a change. My sister-inlaw turned her roots orange & she put a toner on it.It toned it down alittle. Not enough to make me happy.I'm picky about hair. So, I'd try this safe way of keeping your color bright & pretty. They also have colors that will keep the yellow out of it.That's why I use Lemon Flower. Good luck!!

I use Jhirmack shampoo for silver hair (it's purple), a purple conditioner, and Fanciful rinse (white minx is the color) for my blonde and it makes it GREAT. Totally cuts the brass/yellow. I LOVE it. My color person puts a toner on my hair, which I love, but it only lasts about two weeks. I use this other stuff after the toner fades.
