I have waist length hair thats constantly getting tangled. I made the mistake of dying it too much when it was shorter and now I'm trying desperately to repair it. Help!
Hi there! Congratulations on your long hair! If your hair is tangly, I recommend using a conditioner (rinse-out, leave-in, or both) that contains something called quaternary conditioning agents. These ingredients detangle hair and make it easier to comb. Some examples are dicetyldimonium chloride, cetrimonium chloride, behentrimonium metholsulfate and the quaterniums. Unfortunately you cannot actually "repair" your hair since it's dead and lacks the cellular regeneration necessary for repair (such as skin.) However, conditioning agents can coat the hair shaft, thus masking damage and lending a healthier look and feel until you rinse it out. Welcome to the board and hope you enjoy your chats!

I have the SAME problems! Except my hair is only bra-length not waist length. But someday...
Anyway, I used to regularly dye my hair, and now I just touch up the roots with Beach Blonde Sun Streaks by John Frieda. Which is still damaging, but what else can I do? My natural color is so BLAH. Sun Streaks still contains peroxide, but at least it's more mild than anything else I've found.
Sorry to say I usually end up cutting most of the really bad tangles out. BUT, to prevent tangles:
1. Get a trim to take off at least an inch or 2... whatever it takes to get the straw-like, crispy ends off, if you have any. I know, I know, everyone hates to cut their hair, but I reason losing a few inches is better than having constantly knotty, unhealthy hair. Long hair is only attractive if it looks healthy! (In my opinion)
2. Avoid brushing it very much. I usually just detangle my hair with a wide tooth comb. Be sure it doesn't have plastic molding seams that can snag your hair cuticle. Wooden ones are best. The Body Shop sells a nice one for $5. Never comb it wet, either!
3. Avoid using blow dryers or curling irons.
4. Use a mild shampoo and a good conditioner. Many of us are in love with Redken All Soft. Which is a little pricey, but I think it's worth it.
There are many other guidelines I don't have time to type now. Gotta get back to work! But Karen Shelton and Dave Decker (and maybe other authors?) have posted great articles on http://www.hairboutique.com that helped me immensely! Just search on Long Hair Care and you should get several articles.
Oh another thing you might like to try: I usually soak my hair in Jojoba Oil whenever it is really dried out... about once every 3 weeks. I put it in at night and let it stew until the morning. Or even 24 hours if I'm not going anywhere. Just sleep with an old pillowcase, it really isn't that messy. That works wonders! Jojoba Oil is available in health food stores, or even in the health food section of some major grocery stores. It's like $7 for a 2 oz. bottle, which is expensive, but the bottle lasts me like 6 months at least.
Good luck. I hope that helps! Let us know!

1. Always use conditioner on the length below the ears. 2. Deep condition for at least half an hour a week. 3. Use leave in conditioners (for example Infusium 23) and/or gentle oils (monoi/jojoba/sweet almond) on the ends every day whether you wash it or not. 4. Use a wide toothed comb and not a brush to get out tangles, starting from the bottom up. 5. Put hair in a braid at night while you sleep. 6. Use a satin pillowcase. 7. Try to wear hair in protective updos during the day instead of letting it fly free every day. Do these things and I GUARANTEE you will see a big difference in tangles and comb outs!!!
