Yes, blowdryers to cause damage which lead to split ends.
You can prevent split ends with a compilation of many things. Never brush your hair when its wet; it's already stretched out, so it doesn't have much stretch left before it snaps. When you do brush or comb your hair, do it carefully and start at the ends, working your way up to the roots. Cutting down on shampooing, using gentler shampoos, diluting your shampoo, or even just doing CO washes are all ways to make your hair moisturized and therefore stronger. You can also oil your hair to keep it moisturized and protected.
I usually get rid of my splits by cutting them off individually. Use sharp scissors if you do this as dull ones will casue the split end to return. Of course, once my ends start to look thin, I get a trim. But this reduces the frequency of having ot trim my hair.

well shampoo can dry out the hair which leads to splits ends. COing will definitely help the health of your hair (some ppl can't make it work for them, but most can).
If you're not trying to grow your hair out, then I'm sure you can blow dry it and still have it be healthy as long as that's the only damaging thing you do, and you treat it well in every other respect. I found that oiling my hair helped immensely with it's health- made it strong and shiny.
The most important thing is that you're happy. And if volume is important, then go ahead and blowdry it.  Maybe you can let it mostly air dry. Then flip your head upside down (I read this adds volume) and blowdry it on cool.
Hope that helped. If you have any more questions, I'll do my best to answer them.

Use your blow dryer on the cool setting, this is safe.  The heat is what fries your hair.

I reduced the amount of direct heat I apply to my hair which helps a lot with split ends. I've started going to a beauty school in my neighborhood. I go there and get a roller wrap for $9.00 to keep myself from putting direct heat on my hair. This will also add LOADS of volume to your hair. I like big hair.. teheet.

Thanks Gang

safer. If you're blowing air through your hair to  dry it that fast, its still going to dry out the hair shaft.

Edit:
Not discounting what you said Susan. I just didn't want her to make a descision thinking that the cool setting is completely safe when its not
