i did all of those that your mentioned..i had experimented for about 6 weeks before realizing that flat ironing pretty much every other day, is not good for the hair..

i've heard of some women that flat iron their hair every morning, but those that do, are white..at least my white friends have done this using heat protectant..

my 4b/c maybe 5 if there is such a grade is easily reverted within 6  to 8 hours..the porosity control, i found later is to return the hair to it's natural healthy ph balance..it's primarily used to chemically treated hair..but some folks like it for it's moisturizing and pore reducing properties as well...

my edges are all gone now..except 1"..and believe me, i 've tried everything on the market except gear grease and duct tape...

but thanks for those suggestions...I liked the Simply Stylin' , it came highly recommended, as well... too much heat still did it in...

unfortunately, i've learned the hard way...no ones fault but my own...when it comes down to it..heat is heat and my hair reverted..Cry..if a heat protectant could really protect our hair, i'd be happy to slather it on my body as well, and stand in flames..

but those last three defiant strands on my head showed and proved...

Thanks ladies..i really appreciate what you've posted..i'm the fool for pressing so often...it was all in my own ignorance..

Hey femmemusle what helped me but for sheer laziness didn't do the last time I flat ironed was use an ACV rinse or add Pororisty control to my deep conditioner it corrects the porosity of the hair so that the conditioner is better absorbed I think...I think it also smooths the hair cuticle might be worth a try(cross wrapping it at night smoothed hair back down)...lolol I love what you said about men at MAC because you are so dead on with that..the first time at a MAC counter was man who hooked me up! :-)

thanks ladies! blackhoney, i was as good as gold when it came to my deep conditioning..every week.. didn't do anything noticeable for my edges..

They still balled up the moment i sweated...somedays, my hair would revert in less than 8 hours..

What i didn't understand:  there are some forum members that can go without pressing for weeks at a time..how can this be if you're natural, and sweating?

This is the first time i'm seeing a male beautician? and maybe i should have done this sooner..when i go to MAC cosmeticians, the best makeup artists are men..i think they know better about how women should look? When i modeled, the best clothes designers? men...not exactly "straight" men, but they were still men.."they're visual"..

and yes, Kellie, the moment "tony" comes switching toward me with a "super" relaxer in one hand and a machete in the other one..i'm bailin!!

hey Kelly!

Yep..i'm sorry too...with my essential oils, i think i'll have my hair back in about a year..

I was not happy with my beautician..and let her know about the hair breakage.  she turned around and said "Well, if you use loads of grease, your hair won't break off"...until i came on these forums, i had no idea how to take care of my own natural hair... and she kept extolling the virtues of pressing the hair, versus using those offensive chemicals to relax the hair..

i'm breaking away from the weaves...my hair is shoulder length, nappy and healthy..i think i'll wear a wig for a couple of weeks, then get it texturized..

their's an exclusive salon here in the bay area, that is very well known for it's "5 star" stylist named Tony, who specializes in relaxers/texturizers..we've talked, and i'm looking to having him work with me, and let my hair out for once..I have to travel 2 1/2 hours to sacramento, for Margaret to do my hair, San franisco, is only 20 minutes away...

Hell, after all of these weave trauma's, my hair hasn't seen the light of day for quite a few years...other client's from the salon are always going on about how he not only does a great job, but he also teaches the clients how to maintain their styles until their next visit..

So i think, my next appointment with my weave specialist will be a take-down, and a visit to a nice wig shop...

i'm sorry that happened to you. didn't your hair dresser see what was happening to your hair. OMG. you need to change her if she said nothing. its her job to look out for your hair..
but sometimes we gotta do what we gotta do and it seems like you done it.

thanks everyone...i deep conditioned, everything..my hair kept reverting after my workouts..i did everything..gel, silk scarf, you name it..i did all that i could to keep from using heat..it just didn't work..when i woke up in the morning, my hairline wasn't matching the silky straight texture of my weave.. so i'd have to use heat..before going to school, and work..

and it broke off..sure did..just plain old broke off..

thank goodness. i only had about 1/4" out in the front..it was thick and long enough, so that i could keep the rest of my hair in a weave..i have changed over to a EPRT closure piece to match the rest of my relaxed textured weave..i blame myself for letting my beautician sell me something she happened to have in the shop, versus waiting for the EPRT..and trying to match a texture that my hair never could be in the first place.

so, i decided, no more heat..i used a relaxer on what was left about 1" in length..and wished i had done it long time ago..i put it on just long enough to relax that extremely tight curl pattern..10 minutes maybe 15 mins. max..it matches the EPRT perfectly..

when i neutralized..the curl pattern wasn't straight, just looser..now, i can lay it down at night with a botanical pomade (aveda)...before this i use an essential oil mix of vitamin e, jojoba oil, rosemary oil, and peppermint oil..to help grow my hairline back..

It's hard to find castor oil where i live, but vitamin e works just as well..for those who's hair reverts quickly after a press, and you're a workout freak like myself, i have to say, a mild relaxing is far better than using too much heat on the head..i learned the hard way...

Hi Femmemuscle,

The best conditioners I have tried were Nature's Gate Herbal Daily Conditioner, Nature's Gate Hydrating Hair Masque (Deep Conditioner) and
Giovanni Smooth As Silk Conditioner.  When you have virgin hair, depending on the texture, no matter what flat iron you use, what setting, the hair will revert back to it's natural state.  Especially in humidity.
I guess it's just a matter of finding what works for you, but too much heat can be just as bad as a chemical relaxer.  Breakage is the problem with both, because we all want to look great.  My daughter uses the flat iron on her virgin hair, but it's just a matter of time before it frizzes up again.  She doesn't want to uses chemicals, so she just has to work with it.  The high heat always gives her bad split ends though.  So she takes breaks from it, tries to cut down on the heat and get her ends trimmed every few weeks.

Keep protecting your hair with deep cond treatments and moisturizers. I think you'll see an improvement in your flat ironed hair if you do. Also you could try a heat protectant that guards against frizz ( I use Frederic Fekkai Summer Hair) This may help too :)

i've been doing research on deep penetrating conditioners..the Biolage, is a "medium" conditioner..it doesn't penetrate the cuticle no matter how long you keep it on..I've learned that any conditioner that can be kept on for 1-3 minutes is not a "deep penetrating" type..

If the instructions state at least 15 - 20, even up to an hour with cap, or hair drier or both, then it's a deep penetrating conditioner..
I bought "Organics Hair Mayonaise"..it worked..

After flatironing a bit, i noticed my hair started going dry  and beginning to split at the ends...between shampoos/conditioning..I bought the Organics Carrot oil creme..and before flat ironing, followed you ladies' suggestion, watch the temp, added a leave-in (i chose Humectress)...split  ends went away..

I also changed flat irons from Jilbere to Sedu..what a difference..But my hair still reverts at the end of the day..at least it takes 8 hours to do so versus 1 - 3 hours...

I think most creamy leave ins can be used on dry hair Neutrogena can be used on can be used on dry hair and it actually works better on dry hair IMO...is the Biolage also a weekly medium protein strength conditioner? Let us know how the Biolage works out

i was looking for one that doesn't require "daily shampooing"...any suggestions?

Also, i was using Apoghee before they changed their ingredients..and switched to Biolage "Hydrotherape".  i'll be using this under a plastic cap and a hair dryer maybe once or twice a week ..see how this turns out...it actually only requires 1-3 minutes, actually...but i'm hearing of folks using it for 15 or 30 minutes with cap and dryer..

Black Honey, by deep moisturizing do you mean conditioning, covering with plastic and sitting under heat??

I found out that my flat iron last longer if I do a deep moisturizing treatment and use water based leave ins beforehand otherwise the hair will pull moisture out of the air leanding to frizz....maybe you should use a waterbased leave in under the light hair grease and see what the results are (btw be careful on the temp setting I suffered heat damage setting my iron way to high) HTH

yes, i use the loreal heat protectant..it's made specifically for flat ironing..when i was the in the shop, the beautician used a hot comb..and it looked fabulous...prior to this, she used a light "hair grease" to hold the moisture..it looked great until that fatal "walk on the beach"...

I flat ironed it  on a low setting, about "5" on the Jilbere. this morning..it looks great for about 30 mins. to an hour, after that, it's going back to it's natural tight, thick curl pattern...

tourmaline is suppose to smooth the cuticle so it doesnt frizz when your done. DO you use some sort of leave-in or moisturizing protectant on your hair before flat ironing? This will give the hair some weight because your holding in moisture

my hair is shoulder blade length in the back and shoulder length in the front...it's all virgin hair..with the help of my beautician and her fantastic weaves...it grew out very healthy and thick..this is not a joke.

Needless to say, it also had a lot to do with nutrition, washing and conditioning 2'ce a week, and keeping the hair moisturized often.  this is also due to the advice of you ladies on this forum..i'm very grateful..

my beautician kept  3/4 of my hair protected in a weave with a small part of my hair left out for the hairline this time...it's long...but fragile...she applied heat to blend my hair in with the weave hair, this hair is "textured" or kinky relaxed..the style looked great in the beauty salon...but when i walked on the beach and came back home..you would have thought someone came up and scared the crap out of me..at least at the hairline...it just stood straight out, and had the old coarse texture...

I went out and bought a tourmaline flatiron, vs. a hot comb, and was told my hair would relax with use...i'm also using deep conditioning treatments on my hairline especially, and being extra gentle with it...my question is..

after using the flatiron, and moisturizing..my hair draws up again...is my setting too low? or do i just have stubborn hair?Confused
