I have hair that is just below shoulder length.  It is extremely thick.  I have natural curl (more like wave, actually) underneath - the top layer is straight as a stick.

I work in a food environment where I have to tie my hair back so that is one of my considerations.

I like my hair all one length as it is easy to handle and easy to pull back.

My problem is that as thick as it is during the summer months it is torture - even with it pulled back.

I've considered layering it to get rid of some of the extra bulk, but that causes issues with being able to tie it back.

I knew a girl years ago that had her hair shaved on the bottom and long and straight on the top.  I've considered this option.  But it seems kind of "punk" to me.  If I remember correctly she had the under part completely shaved off.  But do you have to go to those extremes?  Could you just go really short underneath and then just leave the top long?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!  Thanks in advance!!!

Hi.  There are many techniques available to cut internal layers to curly hair.  If I were your hairdresser, I would never shave the back of your head.  The only time that is okay is if you have a short undercut bob with some wierd collics.  Then a little shaving is okay, but the layers over it cover it.

Most likely, I would divide the hair on the back of your head at the bottom of the occipital.  I would take the lower section, take a vertical piece, lift it up, and slowly slice through the hair with my shears in an downward c motion.

In the upper section, I would revers.  I would scoop out hair in an upward c.  This will remove bulk internally without shaving.

You must not, I repeat, must not let someone thin your hair with a texture shears or razor.  You already have enough texture, you need someone skilled with shears and curly hair.

In Madison WI, a price for a cut like that should be around 40-60 bucks.  In cities like chicago and new york, your looking at least 100 or more.

If you only pay 13.95, you will get 13.95 results.
