i know i asked this awhile ago, but i went back to look at the thread and saw it wasn't answered as it probably got lost in my sea of other q's lol.
ok, i have 3 oz all on one big long machine weft. when i go in to have my hair colored and bring my weft, should i have it cut to where it will be going on my head first so the highlights/color match correctly?

I dont think you should cut those wefts one bit! That hair is too nice. Once its cut, its cut and its already fine so if you start cutting, you may then think you dont have enough hair and need another weft. Can you just color you hair, color the wefts to match, then get it installed with protac and THEN have someone very good with highlights go back and do you natural top hair and then all through the length of the extension hair. i thnk this is the best way because once its all done, you can THEN go back and trim or cut as much as you want but first get a feel for how it will be one length.

OK, so you've decided to leave the wefts the color they are, dye your hair to match your wefts, cut and install the wefts yourself with protac, correct? Now, are the wefts highlighted and that's why you're dying and highlighting your hair to match the wefts?

ugh! i just typed a long response and it didn't post!
ok, the weft hair is all medium brown. my hair is dark brown, regular brown, with blonde highlights. so, in order to dye my hair to match the weft, id have to lighten my whole head and dye it medium brown. this is why i figured id dye my hair and the weft the same color then add highlights with both. from what ive read on this board, i thought it was a major no-no to install w/protac and THEN color hair....but if it isnt, id def. do that instead! oh, and krimsa, when i said 'cut' i meant the sections i measure my head for for installing the wefts, not the length of the weft hair...goodness no! lol

If you're using tape and getting your own hair highlighted you don't need your wefts highlighted. It should blend but if your not sure, she can clip the weft under your hair so you can decide if you need to highlight the weft too. It's not like with sew-ins because all of your own hair is out and will be blended with the wefts.
My suggestion is to color the hair before you install it.. Also MsHoney is right.. You may not need to color the hair at all. If your hair is all of those browns already with the blond highlights, the hair might blend in very nicely with no modifications needed at all.. You may be able to just highlight the wefts to match your current highlights..
A lot of the ladies here mix and match colors in their installs and they look AMAZING!! I had a KICK A$$ install where I blended 1b, a 2-6-7 mix, and a 6-7-13 mix without dying ANY of my own hair at all.. The way my stylist placed the different colors of hair gave the whole install a very natural look and I didn't have to lighten or color my own naturally 1b hair to get the colors to work well together.. You might be able to do the same thing with your wefts.. Either don't dye it at all or just have it highlighted to match your current highlights OR add lowlights that match your dark brown hair..

well im not a color expert by any means, so do you all think maybe i should just bring the weft in with me and see what my stylist has to say? and again, should i cut the long weft into the pieces im going to install with? here are pics of my hair and a pic of the weft (even though im pretty positive all of you saw my weft post)..sorry i just got out of the shower and my hairs not "done" haha..

You don't have to be a color expert at all girl.. It's about what do you want.. If you are asking for opinions, I'd say that your hair will blend just fine. If you want to make it match your hair, then I would do either highlights to pick up your existing blonde highlights or low light to pick up the darker brown.. Or do NOTHING at all.. You have a lot of different colors in your hair now, so I think you can very easily add this new hair without the need to color at all.. It's really up to you.. What is your "mood" telling you?
As for cutting the wefts, there is no need to cut the hair to fit unless you are doing the install.. Let your stylist do this for you..

Oh you meant cutting the strips of weft! Im sorry I thought you meant the length on the extensions. Yes allow whoever is doing the protac install to do that for gods sake. Just to be on the safe side. You dont want to ruin anything. I forgot those machine wefts are like all one strip. Mine was 3 separate strips.
I love the highlights in your natural hair and I agree with Diva just have the install done, take a deep breath and look at it from all angles and in the sunlight especially and really take it in because it might just look great like that. But if you want to play around with it, it can still be done post install.
IMO if you want to color your wefts, you want to color the hair BEFORE your install.. You do not want to chance any of the color getting trapped between the attachment and possibly damaging your hair..

Ya I meant the highlights not the base color. Wouldnt the highlights be up on top mainly, like runnign through her natural hair the way the sun would hit it?

well my mom is doing my install....im saying, should i have her measure my head and cut the weft pieces BEFORE i go to my colorist so she knows better how to color the wefts bc of where on my head theyll be? like should i go to the colorist with my hair already cut into the sections it will be when i install and just tell her where on my head each piece will be going or youre saying bring the whole long weft in and no matter how she colors it, itll blend? i want to color my hair bc my highlights are so grown out and i want it all brown....im too nervous to install it only to have it not blend as well as id like it to....sorry guys i know im frustrating! haha=]

either way will be fine. Cutting them before hand won't be a problem at all. Just make sure you label the pieces so she can have a general idea where they'll be placed on your head.

IMO no.. I know what you are getting at so let me put it to you another way.. You can order hair that is already highlighted. I once ordered custom hair and highlighted my own hair to match. My stylist did not need to try and match the highlights up with the highlights in my hair..

IMO, I would not cut the hair in sections before you get it colored.. Bring the hair in one single weft to the colorist. She will take it from there.. Based on you current hair colors, IMO it will blend.. It's all about weft placement.. We all do it all the time here.. Like I said in my previous post, I had no problem blending two different tri-color blends which were not at ALL the same color as my own natural hair.. I was able to get it to blend in without having to color my own hair to match..

I agree that pics would be great. It sounds like UCFXtina is really doing her homework especially working on the highlighting issues. I can't wait to see how they turn out.
On a related topic, Brigid just came back from Australia and she still had most of her recent strand extensions in place. She said she lost about 8 strands during the long plane rides but made it through 2 weeks in Oz with no problems.
Brigid has already picked out her next install kit that she wants to try but first she is going to remove her current strands and then get her roots & highlights refreshed. Then on to the 2nd project. Hopefully next weekend.
Brigid currently has at least 8 shades interwoven through her natural brunette. She decided to wait to pick the next color to see how the highlights turn out first.
By the way Diva, her hair colorist told Brigid pretty much what you said about blending and just buying the hair to match. :-)
We also have another hair extension DIYer volunteer at HB named Angie and she wants to try a couple of systems as well. We also have a guy who wants to try them. That would be cool. Not sure how they would turn out.
